Toledo Comes Up Short at USC Upstate, 7-6

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Toledo baseball team lost its series finale at USC Upstate on Sunday, 7-6.

The Rockets took an early lead thanks to a three-run home run from Chris Meyers in the top of the first, but the Spartans answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning and added to their lead with two more runs in the second. Toledo chipped away at its deficit in the sixth and seventh, and Trace Hatfield's double in the top of the ninth put the tying run in scoring position. The Rockets were unable to bring him home though, with Upstate's Kevin Davis striking out the next two batters to end the game.

Meyers drove in three runs for Toledo on Sunday afternoon, and the other runs were brought in by Nicky Winterstein and Mason Sykes. Winterstein hit his first home run of the year in the top of the sixth, then drove in another run in the seventh with a base hit up the middle. Zach Schwartzenberger led all players with three hits, while Trace Hatfield and John Servello each had two base hits apiece.

Jordan Power started on the mound and struck out five in four innings. Kyle Bischoff threw 1.2 innings out of the bullpen, striking out two, while Layne Schnitz-Paxton ended the game with 2.1 scoreless frames and four strikeouts.

Toledo returns to the Carolinas next weekend for a three-game series at Davidson.

How it Happened
  • Toledo took its first lead of the weekend on a three-run bomb from Meyers in the top of the first. Servello and Darryn Davis led off the game with base hits, then came home to score on Meyers' dinger to right field.
  • Power got himself into early trouble in the bottom of the first, allowing four runs to give the Spartans a 4-3 lead. All four of Upstate's runs came with two outs.
  • USC Upstate made it 6-2 after a two-run second inning, highlighted by an RBI double deep to center field by Jason Matthews.
  • The Rockets had a couple opportunities to chip into the Spartans' lead, leaving two runners on base to end the fourth and fifth innings.
  • Winterstein came off the bench to pinch hit to start the top of the sixth and launched a home run to right field, the second homer of the day for Toledo.
  • Upstate got that run back in the bottom of the sixth on a passed ball to make it 7-4.
  • The Rockets made it a one-run game in the top of the seventh. Meyers and Hatfield both reached base to lead off the inning, then advanced to second and third after a passed ball. Meyers scored easily on a sac fly from Sykes, and Hatfield scampered home on a base hit from Winterstein to make it 7-6.
  • Hatfield's one-out double in the top of the ninth put the tying run at second base, but the Rockets couldn't drive him in with their final two at-bats.
