Toledo Shot Down at Bowling Green, 76-59

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Toledo dropped a 76-59 decision to arch-rival Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon at the Stroh Center. The loss puts the Rockets' overall record at 8-7 and brings their Mid-American Conference mark to 4-7.

Sophomore Quinesha Lockett led Toledo with 17 points, the 10th time this season she has led her team in scoring. Sophomore Mali Morgan-Elliott added nine points and nine rebounds, while freshman Sammi Mikonowicz registered nine points, seven boards, and three steals.

UT also received a career-high seven points from Jaela Johnson, all of which came in the fourth quarter.

Toledo led Bowling Green (13-3, 9-2 MAC) by a point at the end of the first quarter, but the Falcons proceeded to shoot 60 percent (27-for-45) from the field in the final three quarters to pull away. BGSU dominated in the paint, where it recorded 48 of its 76 points.

Senior Angela Perry led all comers with 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Bowling Green had two other players reach double-figures in scoring, sophomore Elissa Brett and freshman Lexi Fleming, who scored 13 points apiece.

First Quarter
  • Both teams opened the game with a three-pointer and continued to trade baskets throughout the first 10 minutes.
  • Toledo scored the final five points of the first stanza to take a 15-14 lead. Freshman Khera Goss' layup and Morgan-Elliott's three successful free throws all came with under a minute to play and helped UT take a lead into the second quarter.
  • Morgan-Elliott pulled down four rebounds in the first quarter to help the cause.

Second Quarter
  • The second quarter was a different story, as Bowling Green jumped out to a 12-4 scoring run to take a 28-19 lead.
  • The Falcons ended the second frame with a 10-3 run to give themselves a 38-24 advantage heading into halftime.
  • Toledo attempted just eight field goals in the second quarter and went over six minutes at one point without a successful shot from the field (8:49-2:29). In that time, Bowling Green turned a one-point deficit into an 11-point lead.
Third Quarter
  • The third quarter started on a positive note for the Rockets. Wiard knocked down a three to get her team on the board, then on the ensuing BG possession Mikonowicz stole the ball and took it all the way back for a layup.
  • After the Mikonowicz basket, the Falcons rattled off a 17-4 run to really pull away and give themselves a 57-35 lead.
  • BGSU made nine of its last 10 shots to open up a 21-point lead heading into the final period.

Fourth Quarter
  • Toledo outscored Bowling Green 21-17 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome the large deficit incurred over the previous 20 minutes of play.
  • Johnson was a perfect 2-for-2 from the field and from the charity stripe, including a three-pointer, to give her seven points for the quarter.
  • Lockett (eight points) and Morgan-Elliott (six) combined with Johnson to score all of the Rockets' 21 points in the final stanza.
