Rockets Shot Down by Blazers, 9-5

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— The Toledo baseball team fell to UAB, 9-5, on Saturday at Regions Field in Birmingham.

The Rockets led for nearly the entire game until a late offensive outburst by the Blazers. UAB scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to stun Toledo and even the series at 1-1.

Junior Jordan Power threw seven solid innings for Toledo, striking out five while walking just two. Sophomore Ryan Thompson drove in two runs and had one of the Rockets' two extra-base hits on Saturday. Junior Trace Hatfield went 2-for-4 at the plate, and sophomore Darryn Davis extended his hitting streak to 19 games. He turned in a 1-for-2 performance at the dish, scoring two runs while walking and getting hit by a pitch as well.

"Very disappointed with the outcome of this game," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "We have to find a way to hold a late lead and put someone away. It's easy to play when you're up big; it's holding a 3-5 run lead late that we have to be able to do. Today our offense wasn't great, but we did enough to win the game. Jordan was awesome, I hate that we couldn't get him the win. As bad as we feel right now, we still have a chance to win a weekend series against a good opponent. Tomorrow is a huge game and a test to see what kind of club we really have."

Toledo and UAB conclude their weekend series on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET.

How it Happened
  • After bludgeoning the Blazers with 17 hits on Friday evening, the Rockets got off to a hot start on Saturday with two runs in the top of the first. Thompson's RBI double and Hatfield's RBI single put Toledo ahead, 2-0, before UAB had a chance to bat.
  • The Blazers got on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-out solo home run, putting the score at 2-1.
  • UAB had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the second, but an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play halted any potential threat.
  • Toledo went up 4-1 after a two-run third inning. Junior Chris Meyers drove a 2-2 pitch into the gap in left center field which allowed Davis to score easily. The Blazers then traded two outs for a run, turning a 4-6-3 double play that allowed Meyers to cross the plate.
  • Toledo extended its lead to 5-2 in the top of the eighth. With runners at the corners, Meyers took off for second and Davis trotted home easily when the throw down to second trickled into center field.
  • UAB had trailed since the top of the first inning, but scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to storm back and take a 9-5 lead over Toledo. After the first batter of the inning struck out, Blazer Zach Davis hit a two-run home run to make it 5-4. UAB loaded the bases with two walks and a double, then its next five hitters drove in runs to completely flip the script. Twelve batters took to the plate for the Blazers in the bottom of the eighth, turning a three-run deficit into a four-run lead.
