Rockets Fall to South Dakota State, 8-3

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Toledo softball team (9-10) fell, 8-3, to South Dakota State (14-7) Tuesday on the first day of The Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Fla. Senior Morgan Paaverud hit a three-run homer, her fourth of the season, in the sixth inning to break up the shutout by the Jackrabbits but it was not enough. Senior Leah Allison pitched 5.2 innings in relief of McKenna Schmidt, allowing just two runs.
 
How it happened
  • The Jackrabbits took an early lead, putting up five runs in the top of the first inning. Cylie Halvorson knocked a three-run homer over the left field fence to take a 3-0 lead. Three batters later, Chiara Bassi doubled to left field, bringing home two more runs.
  • SDSU added another run in the top of the second, as Kelsey Lennox hit a one-run single to left center, bringing home Olivia Pfeifer.
  • The Jackrabbits added one more run in the top of the fifth, as Allison Beaudry hit a solo home run over the center field fence.
  • Paaverud cut into SDSU's lead in the bottom of the sixth, belting a three-run home run to bring the Rockets within four, 7-3.
  • Daughtery added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single up the right side.
  • The Rockets loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but were unale to capitalize.
