MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Toledo softball team (10-11) split day two of The Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Fla. on Wednesday thanks to stellar pitching performances from juniors Maggie McGurk and Erin Hunt. McGurk and Hunt combined on a 2-0 shutout over South Dakota State in the second of two games. In the first game of the day, the Rockets fell to Butler, 4-0.

Game One
The Rockets were unable to get a run across the plate against Butler (15-7). Aubrey Reed had Toledo's only hit while Hunt allowed four runs on five hits to suffer her third loss of the season.

How it happened

The game began as a defensive standoff with neither team scoring in the first three innings.
Butler's Madi Christiansen hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.
Butler added two more runs in the top of the seventh as Kinley Longest ripped a two-run homer over the left center wall.

Game Two
While McGurk and Hunt kept SDSU in check, senior Morgan Paaverud and freshman Lily Beyer were the hitting heroes of the game. Paaverud's double in the top of the seventh broke a scoreless tie. Hunt came in relief in the fifth inning, striking out two and allowing just one hit in 2.2 innings.

How it happened

The game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh when Paaverud knocked a sharply hit double to center field to bring home Bri Robeson. Beyer entered the game as a pinch runner for Paaverud and came around to score on a bad throw to third to put the Rockets up 2-0.
The game had a dramatic finish, as the Jackrabbits loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Hunt induced Olivia Pfeifer to ground out to end the rally and secure the victory.
