SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Toledo softball team started the 2020 season with two big wins on day one of the H.E.B. Classic in San Antonio, Texas. The Rockets defeated Creighton 2-0 in the morning contest, later coming back for a hard-fought 7-5 victory over Texas Southern in the afternoon.
Junior
Erin Hunt and freshman
McKenna Schmidt put together a nice day on the mound for the Rockets. Hunt threw a one-hitter and tied her program record for strikeouts in a single game (14) in Game One, while Schmidt earned her first win in the Midnight Blue and Gold in the nightcap.
Transfer
Dayna Denner had a big day in her debut as a Rocket, pounding out three hits and knocking in six runs. Denner's five RBIs in Game Two ties for second in program history for RBIs in a single game.
"Today was a day where we got done what we needed to do to win two games," said head coach
Joe Abraham. "Erin dominated in the circle and we pushed across two runs for her against Creighton. In the second game, we got five runs in the first two innings against a very good pitcher for Texas Southern. After they got the score tied,
McKenna Schmidt just threw two huge scoreless innings in her debut. Texas Southern had all the momentum and McKenna put in a clutch performance. Dayna had a great game at the plate and smoked a triple to center for the go-ahead runs. We just had clutch performances all around, including
Bri Robeson who was on base all day for us." ??
Game One
The first game of the day saw impressive work both offensively and defensively for the Rockets. Hunt had perfect game going into the sixth inning and earned her 18
th career win, while Denner and
Anna Dixon had one RBI each for Toledo.
- Senior Morgan Paaverud led off in the second inning, hitting a double and giving the Rockets a scoring opportunity. Dixon took full advantage of that opportunity, hitting a hard single to left field. Her hit pushed Paaverud home on a throwing error.
- Hunt threw a perfect game until the sixth inning, when Sydney Jenkins reached first on an error. The no-hitter was broken up later that inning when Ashley Cantu laid down a bunt single.
- Sophomore Raquel Emery singled to left field in the seventh inning, advancing to second on a wild pitch just moments later. Emery made it home when Denner singled up the middle three batters later.
- Creighton went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the seventh with Hunt striking out two of three batters.

Game Two
The Rockets went up early against the Tigers in game two, scoring five of their seven runs in the first and second innings. Texas Southern tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth, but Toledo was able to add two more runs in the sixth to earn the victory. Schmidt earned her first win as a Rocket, while Hunt earned the save.
- Playing as the home team, Toledo allowed two runs in the top of the first, only to add two of their own in the bottom of the inning. Robeson singled to the left side of the field to lead off, stealing second moments later. Denner's big bat came into play again as she homered to right field, tying the game at 2-2 early.
- Freshman Lily Beyer took a pitch to the left arm to get on base for the Rockets in the second inning. Freshman Macy Moore singled to center field, pushing Beyer to third. Robeson hit another single up the middle, bringing Beyer home and moving Moore to second. Freshman Leah Munson reached first on a walk, loading the bases and setting Denner to have another strong bat. Denner hit a hard ball to left field to bring Moore and Robeson in, extending the Rockets' lead to 5-2.
- Texas Southern tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth.
- With Moore and Robeson on third and second, Denner continued her hitting onslaught, adding two more RBIs to her stat line with an impressive triple to right center that brought Moore and Robeson home.
