Toledo Drops 12-5 Decision to UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Toledo baseball team started its weekend at the Alamo Irish Classic with a 12-5 loss to UTSA on Thursday.

The Rockets grabbed an early lead, but a five-run third inning from UTSA flipped the script and put Toledo in a 7-2 deficit it wasn't able to overcome. Offensively sophomore Ryan Thompson and junior Chris Meyers both tallied two hits, and Meyers also hit his second home run of the season. All five runs were driven in by different players: Meyers, junior Lorenzo DeBrecht, junior Trace Hatfield, junior Zach Schwartzenberger, and freshman Trey Wright all recorded RBIs on Thursday.

Three different pitchers saw time on the mound. Senior Doug Smith threw four innings out of the bullpen, while senior Wyatt Jefferson and junior Bryce Davis both added two innings apiece.

Toledo and UTSA will face off again on Friday at 2:00 p.m. ET. The Rockets will then battle Incarnate Word and Notre Dame on Saturday.

How it Happened
  • Toledo struck first with two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead. With runners on first and second, Schwartzenberger laced a line drive into right field to plate the first run. In the next at-bat, Wright's ground ball trickled into left field and scored a run to extend Toledo's lead.
  • UTSA answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the second. An RBI double into the gap in left-center field brought home the first run. A bases-loaded ground ball to second base resulted in a 4-3 double play, but the tying run came in to score and put the ledger at 2-2.
  • The Rockets were not devoid of offensive chances early on; Toledo had multiple runners on base in each of the first three innings.
  • The Roadrunners scored five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-2 lead. UTSA capitalized on a couple Toledo fielding miscues and two early walks to put a crooked number on the scoreboard.
  • DeBrecht drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to make the score 7-3.
  • UTSA tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth frames to extend its lead to 10-3.
  • Hatfield's RBI double in the eighth inning made it 10-4. Senior Nicky Winterstein ripped a pinch hit double down the left field line and came around to score on Hatfield's two-bagger.
  • UTSA added two runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a leadoff, solo home run.
  • Meyers' towering home run in the top of the ninth wrapped up the scoring on Thursday.
