Rockets Fall at East Tennessee State, 15-1

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Toledo baseball team faced East Tennessee State for the second time this weekend on Saturday, falling 15-1.

The Rockets' lone run came from junior Danny O'Reilly's solo home run in the fourth inning, his first as a Rocket. Sophomore Ryan Thompson went 2-for-2 at the plate and freshman Trey Wright had two hits in his first career start. Sophomore Darryn Davis had the only other extra-base hit for Toledo, a two-out double in the fourth inning.

Senior Nicky Winterstein started on the mound, throwing 2.2 innings. Sophomore Kyle Jones, junior Kyle Bischoff, senior Billy Todorowski, and junior Sam Prince all saw time out of the bullpen. Bischoff threw 1.1 scoreless frames, the only unscathed Toledo pitcher on the afternoon.

"It just wasn't our day today," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "We got out of the gate fine, but things unraveled a bit in the third. We have to be better getting ahead of hitters and not giving them free bases. Everyone we play is going to get hits, but we can limit the damage by not giving them free runners. Offensively, we have the ability to swing the bats, but we've been passive at times. Today we had chances to score and get right back in the game, but couldn't get one across. The best thing about baseball is tomorrow is a new day; I expect us to come out ready to go and win the game. We have the pieces to be a good baseball team, but at some point we have to seize the opportunity and make good things happen."

Toledo and ETSU conclude their weekend series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

How it Happened
  • ETSU opened up the scoring with a five-run third inning. A sacrifice fly and bases loaded walk brought home two runs, then a two-out, bases-clearing double made it 5-0.
  • O'Reilly put Toledo on the board with a two-out solo home run to left field, his first as a Rocket.
  • The Bucs broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth. Another five-run inning, highlighted by a two-run home run to left field, put the Rockets behind 10-1.
  • Toledo loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with three straight base hits, but couldn't bring any runs home to cut into ETSU's lead.
  • East Tennessee State added four runs in the bottom of the seventh, all with two outs. A two-run double and a two-run homer pushed the score to 14-1.
  • The final run of the game was scored in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly, bringing about the final score of 15-1.
