Petronela Simiuc Breaks Toledo's Indoor Mile Record

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Toledo women's track and field team sent seven Rockets to the John Thomas Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University in Boston, Mass. on Friday where senior Petronela Simiuc broke Toledo's school record in the mile with a time of 4:38.40, placing sixth overall. The record was previously 4:39.81, set in 2014 by Megan Wright at the SPIRE D1 Invitational. Simiuc had been No. 3 in the all-time list with a time of 4:42.92, set at last year's David Hemery Valentine Invitational, also hosted by Boston University.Â

"We had a fantastic day in Boston and I'm so proud of the efforts of our entire group," said head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough. "Petronela started the night off with an outstanding effort in the mile. A new school record and big personal best was definitely the highlight. It's a great confidence booster for the group and momentum-builder this early in the season."

Freshman Emily Vining also recorded a personal-best in the mile, stopping the clock at 4:59.85. Junior Meltem Yasar led the Rockets in the 3,000 meters, posting a personal-best of 9:42.77 to place 12th. Sophomore Maya Hannagan also clocked a personal best of 10:07.42 in the 3,000m.Â

Senior Stephanie Sherman closed out the day for the Rockets with a five-second improvement on her personal-best in the 5,000 meters, clocking a time of 17:20.03 to take 14th. Â

The Toledo squad will be in action tomorrow at the SPIRE Midwest Open in Geneva, Ohio. Track events start at 9:00 a.m. and field events begin at 10:00 a.m.Â
