Rockets Drop Series Opener at Ball State, 10-1

Muncie, Ind. — The Toledo baseball team kicked off its final weekend series of the season on Thursday, falling at Ball State by a score of 10-1.

The Rockets took the first lead of the game after scoring a run in the top of the first, but the Cardinals tallied 10 unanswered runs to win game one of this series.

Freshman Darryn Davis went 2-for-3 with two doubles and the lone RBI, his second straight game with multiple extra-base hits. Senior Brad Boss also tallied two hits on the afternoon. Junior Doug Smith started on the mound and threw five innings, while freshman Kyle Jones threw the final three frames.

Toledo and Ball State will play again on Friday at 1:00 p.m., an earlier start time than originally scheduled due to expected rain in the area.

How it Happened
  • Davis gave Toledo an early lead with an RBI double in the top of the first, but was thrown out attempting to stretch it into a triple. Sophomore Zach Schwartzenberger was hit by a pitch to reach base, then scored from first on the hit by Davis.
  • Ball State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first. A two-out, two-run triple brought in both runs.
  • The Rockets had runners at the corners with one out, but an unorthodox double play on a ground ball to the pitcher ended the inning.
  • The Cardinals scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead thanks to a line-drive base hit to left field.
  • Ball State broke the game wide open after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth, taking a 9-1 advantage over the Midnight Blue and Gold. A bases-loaded double and a sacrifice fly brought home the runs in the fifth, and a two-run triple plus another sac fly did the damage in the sixth.
  • Toledo stranded the bases full in the top of the eighth before a BSU leadoff homer in the bottom half of the inning extended the Cardinals' lead to 10-1.
