Rockets Look to Corral Bulls

Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo men's tennis team (10-9, 3-1 in the MAC) is set to host Mid-American Conference opponent Buffalo at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the UT Varsity Courts. In case of inclement weather, the match would be moved to Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Maumee. A broadcast of Friday's match will be available on tape delay from BCSN and ESPN+. There will also be free pizza at the match.

The Rockets earned a season sweep of Binghamton on Saturday in Vestal, N.Y., defeating the Bearcats 5-2. UT kicked things off with wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts from senior Vince Anzalone/junior Danilo Vukotic and senior Juan Carranza/freshman Cole Shoults with both duos winning their matches 6-2.

In singles action,  Vukotic earned his sixth two-set sweep of the season, defeating Kushaan Nath on the No. 1 court, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Omar Espinosa also earned a two-set sweep, defeating Dylan Friedman on the No. 3 court 7-6, 7-5. On the No. 5 and No. 6 courts, senior Serjen Olmedo and freshman Cole Shoults both locked in for three-set thrillers after each dropped their first sets 6-2. Olmedo rose up to take the second set 6-3 over Inigo Saez and clinched the match for the Rockets after taking the third set 6-4. Shoults pushed for a third set against Sebastian Quiros after winning the second 6-4. Shoults secured the Rockets' fifth team point after defeating Quiros in the third set 7-5.

Last Time Against Buffalo
The Rockets fell to Buffalo, 7-0, at Buffalo earlier this season. Senior Vince Anzalone was the closest Rocket to score for Toledo with a 7-6 win in the first set against Hao Sheng Koay. Koay forced a third set, taking the second 6-4. Anzalone later fell 5-10 in the third.

The Bulls are currently 8-8 overall (3-1 in the MAC), with 4-3 victories over Harvard and Mercer. Buffalo notched 7-0 sweeps of Binghamton and Toledo to open conference play before falling 4-3 to Western Michigan. The Bulls had a two-match losing streak to finish the month of March, falling to Ivy League opponents No. 13 Columbia and Yale, before bouncing back to complete a season sweep of Binghamton.

Junior Hao Sheng Koay boasts the team's best singles dual match record, going 11-4 at the No. 3 spot. Fellow junior Villhelm Friedell has the team's second best singles dual match record of 9-6, splitting his time between the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. UB's lone senior Ethan Nittolo has an 8-7 record and has split his time on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts as well. In doubles play, the duo of Nittolo/Koay have a 5-3 record at the No. 1 court and the sophomore duo of Matthew Johnson/Valdemar Holm have a 5-4 record at the No. 3 court.

Last season, the Bulls went 13-10 (5-2 in the MAC), posting four sweeps on the season over UConn, Army, Cleveland State, and Monmouth. UB hosted the MAC Championship as the No. 2 seed. The Bulls edged out No. 3 seed Northern Illinois 4-3 in the semifinals before falling to No. 1 seed Western Michigan 4-2 in the final.
