Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo softball team (21-24, 8-8 MAC) dropped the final game of its series against Western Michigan (16-23, 8-9 MAC) today, falling 2-0 to the Broncos at Scott Park. The Rockets offense was never able to get going as Toledo put up just two hits while leaving six on bases. A pitchers' duel from the very beginning, the contest featured strong performances by Toledo's
Erin Hunt and Western's Jordan Kurth, who both struck out five batters in seven innings of work.
How it happened
- Scoring chances were far and few between as there was only one double and a sprinkling of singles throughout the contest.
- The Broncos looked to open scoring in the third inning as a leadoff single was followed by a sac bunt that beat the throw to put two on. Another sac bunt put the runners in scoring position, and a HBP loaded the bases. With two outs, WMU's Sydney Stefanick stepped up to bring them in but sophomore shortstop Kylie Norwood pulled down a infield fly ball to help put her pitcher and close the top of the inning.
- Toledo was able to put a runner on first in the bottom of the frame as Norwood took one to the leg, but she was left there after a strikeout, groundout and fly out.
- Western Michigan broke the stalemate in the next inning thanks to a pair of singles from Logan Carter and Sophia Ehlers. Carter popped one into left field and then moved to second on a sac bunt. She was then brought home as Ehlers hit a deep shot in the same area of the grass to put WMU up 1-0 before the final out was made.
- The Rockets gave the Broncos a run for their money in the fifth as freshman Aubrey Reed opened with a HBP to put the tying run on. After a sac bunt moved her to second, sophomore Raelyn Nyren walked in four balls. The score chance was ultimately nullified though as Norwood hit into a fielder's choice for the third out.
- Toledo would go on to put a runner on in the six and seventh innings thanks to singles but the lineup couldn't bring them home. Western Michigan put its final run up in the top of the seventh as Brooke Wyman hit a solo homer over the left field fence to put a stamp on the day and end things as 2-0 Broncos.
