Ypsilanti, Mich. — The Toledo baseball team dropped game two of its weekend series with Eastern Michigan by a score of 5-3.
For the second straight game, Toledo grabbed an early lead, but was unable to capitalize against EMU. The Eagles scored three in the bottom of the fourth, the biggest inning of the day for either team. Senior
Brad Boss went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in a couple runs, while sophomore
John Servello added the other RBI for the Rockets. Junior
Layne Schnitz-Paxton started on the mound and threw 4.2 innings, and freshman
Kyle Jones added 3.1 innings, striking out two and walking none.
In the top of the fourth, Boss drew a bases-loaded walk, the 112th walk of his career. That number officially puts him atop the program's career walks list, passing Drew Hoisington (111, 2005-08).
Toledo and Eastern Michigan will conclude this weekend's series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
How it Happened
- Toledo scored the first run of the game with an RBI single in the top of the third. Sophomore Chris Meyers led off the inning with a double, then advanced to third on sophomore Trace Hatfield's single. Servello then laced a base hit up the middle to score Meyers and put UT ahead, 1-0.
- Eastern Michigan tied the game in the bottom half of the third. A two-out walk was followed by a hit-by-pitch, then a single to right field that brought home a run and made the score 1-1.
- Boss drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fourth to put Toledo ahead, 2-1. Freshman Thomas Eitniear started the inning off with a single, then two straight free passes loaded the bases for Boss.
- EMU added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2. After a leadoff double and sacrifice bunt, Eastern Michigan tallied two straight RBI singles to take the lead. The third run of the inning came on an RBI double to right field.
- Boss drove in a run in the sixth to make it 4-3. Freshman Mark Mohnickey scored from second on the base hit, expertly avoiding the tag at home with an excellent slide.
