Rockets Battle Broncos, Huskies This Weekend

4/10/2019 2:25:00 PM

Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo men's tennis team (10-10, 3-2 MAC) is set to round out the regular season this weekend with a road match against Western Michigan at 2:00 p.m. on Friday before hosting Northern Illinois for Senior Day at the UT Varsity Courts at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.  Sunday's match will be streamed live on ESPN3. In case of inclement weather, Sunday's match would be moved to Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Maumee and would not be televised.

Prior to the start of Sunday's match, UT will be honoring their graduating seniors. The Rockets have been led this season by six seniors: Vince Anzalone, Juan Carranza, Omar Espinosa, Serjen Olmedo, Reid Teatsorth, and Luka Vitosevic.

Anzalone, a supply chain management and marketing major from Willoughby Hills, Ohio, has played primarily at the No. 3 position this year and has posted five two-set sweeps and two three-set victories on the season. Carranza, a finance major from Querétaro, Mexico, has played mainly No. 3 doubles paired with freshman Cole Shoults. The pair is on a two-match win streak and has won seven of their doubles competitions this year. Also hailing from Querétaro, Mexico is civil engineering major Espinosa. Espinosa has served the Rockets on the No. 4 court, posting eight two-set sweeps and two three-set victories on the season. In doubles action Espinosa and Vitosevic have led the Rockets on the No. 1 court with eight victories. Vitosevic, a finance major from Belgrade, Serbia, has earned MAC singles player of the week twice this season and has led the Rockets from the No. 1 court. Vitosevic clinched the Rockets' matches against Chicago State and Ball State and has recorded six two-set sweeps this spring. Olmedo, a civil engineering major from Antofagasta, Chile, plays primarily at the No. 6 spot and has won five matches this spring, his last two being three-set victories against Binghamton and Buffalo. Teatsorth hails from Findlay, Ohio and is majoring in broadcast journalism. Teatsorth notched wins over Ashland in singles play and Cleveland State in doubles play this year.

UT hosted Buffalo at the UT Varsity Courts last Friday, falling 4-3 to the Bulls. Despite Carranza/Shoults' 6-3 win on the No. 3 court, the Rockets were just out of reach of the doubles point. The doubles point made the difference in the match, as the Rockets and Bulls split singles. On the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 courts Espinosa, junior Thawin Suksathaporn, and Olmedo came out victorious from their three-set battles.

Last Time Against Western Michigan
The Rockets fell to Western Michigan 7-0 in last season's finale in Toledo.

UT encountered WMU several times during the fall tournament season. Anzalone/Shoults defeated Zac Faveri/Kris Knof in doubles play 6-3, 6-1 at the Rocket Invitational. In October Peter Kuszynski/Jack Randall knocked junior duo Danilo Vukotic/Suksathaporn from the ITA Midwest Regionals doubles bracket 8-3.
