Toledo Falls to UNC Wilmington, 13-5

Wilmington, N.C.— One bad inning was the difference in the Toledo baseball team's 13-5 loss at UNC Wilmington on Thursday evening.

The Rockets and Seahawks were tied at 3-3 entering the bottom of the sixth, but UNCW put seven runs on the board despite not recording a hit in the inning.

Sophomore Chris Meyers went 2-for-3 at the plate and walked twice, while driving in two of the Rockets' runs. Sophomore Trace Hatfield also drove in two runs and sophomore John Servello scored twice. Five pitchers saw time for UT, including freshman Jamie Myers, who threw 3.1 innings in his first career start.

Toledo will wrap up its spring break trip with a three-game series against Bucknell this weekend at Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee, Fla.

How it Happened
  • UNC Wilmington took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first that came on a single to left field.
  • Meyers drew a two out, bases loaded walk in the top of the third to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Seahawks retook the lead the next inning, scoring on a groundout to the shortstop to make it 2-1 through four innings.
  • The Rockets took their first lead of the afternoon in the top of the fifth. With runners on second and third, Hatfield singled straight up the middle to bring home both runs and make the score 3-2.
  • An RBI double for UNCW tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The game got away from the Rockets in the bottom of the sixth. They allowed seven runs despite not allowing a hit in the inning, and after the third out trailed the Seahawks 10-3. Two of the runs scored on bases-loaded walks, two on a throwing error, one on a bases-loaded hit by pitch, one on a fielder's choice, and one on a wild pitch.
  • Meyers tallied an RBI single in the top of the seventh and Schwartzenberger followed that up with a bases-loaded walk to pull within five, 10-5.
  • The Seahawks plated three more runs in the bottom of the seven to make it 13-5. A two-run single and a wild pitch brought in the runs for UNCW.
