Rockets Drop Home Opener to WMU, 6-3

Toledo, Ohio— The Toledo baseball team dropped its home opener on Friday to Western Michigan, falling 6-3 to the Broncos.

WMU did most of its damage in the top of the second, scoring four runs to take a 4-0 lead over the Rockets. UT answered with one run in the bottom of the third and two more in the sixth, but could not overcome the deficit. Western Michigan added two more runs in the top of the ninth to bring about the 6-3 final score.

Senior Michael Jacob threw eight innings and came out for the top of the ninth, while junior Austin Calopietro finished the ninth inning for UT. Junior Michael Ryan launched his third home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth, bringing the Rockets within one with his two-run shot. Sophomore Chris Meyers drove in the other run for Toledo.

The second game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 1:05 p.m. With rain in the forecast for Saturday, keep up-to-date on all things Toledo baseball by visiting utrockets.com and @ToledoBaseball on Twitter.

How it Happened
  • The biggest inning for either team was the top of the second, when WMU plated four runs. An RBI single to right field was followed up by a three-run home run to left field that put the Broncos out in front, 4-0. The first three batters of the inning recorded hits, and a sacrifice bunt proved needless as the runners scored on the round tripper one batter later.
  • Meyers singled in senior Brad Boss in the bottom of the third to make it 4-1. Boss reached on a bunt single, then advanced to second on a throwing error. He was able to move over to third base after another error, then scored on the base hit by Meyers.
  • After allowing a one-out double in the top of the fourth, Jacob retired eight straight batters.
  • Ryan's dinger came in the bottom of the sixth and made the score 4-3. Freshman Darryn Davis reached base on a single up the middle, and he came around to score on the home run.
  • The Broncos added a couple runs in the top of the ninth. An RBI double down the line in right field and a base hit through the right side of the infield allowed two runners to score and made it 6-3.
