Rockets Go Toe-to-Toe with No. 1 FSU, Top Dartmouth in Orlando

Orlando, Fla. - The University of Toledo softball team split day two of the UCF Invitational today with a 5-4 win over Dartmouth and 5-4 loss to No. 1 Florida State. The Saturday contests were highlighted by sophomore Maggie McGurk earning her second win of her career and junior Morgan Paaverud hitting a home run against the Seminoles. The Rockets had their bats going from the first inning of the day, recording 13 hits on the day.

"We had lost an excruciating game last night against Central Florida that ended at 11 p.m. and had to get three in the 7th inning this morning to beat Dartmouth," head coach Joe Abraham said. "We were exhausted and then came out and went toe-to-toe with the number-one team in the country. It was just an incredible effort by our whole team. We couldn't be more proud of our girls."

Game 1
  • The Rockets started with back-to-back doubles in the first to get on the board.
  • Toledo held its lead until the bottom of the second when the Big Green sparked and put up three runs of a one-on single, two-on grounder, and one-on single.
  • Toledo was able to respond in the top of the sixth when, with seniors Megan Choate and Katie Cozy on third and second, sophomore Brittney Davis fouled out to left. The hit was deep enough to allow Choate to score.
  • The Rockets added two in the seventh when Choate doubled to right center, allowing sophomore Kylie Norwood to run in, and Cozy followed with a single to center to bring around Choate.
  • Dartmouth set up a dangerous rally in the final frame when they loaded the bases with no outs. The Big Green's Billie McFadyen grounded into a double play and UT got the final out on a line out to right field.

Game 2
The Midnight Blue and Gold went toe-to-toe with a giant in FSU and held their own until the final inning when the Seminoles pulled away.

  • FSU took an early lead in the first when Anna Shelnutt hit a bases-loaded grounder brought in one before the final out of the inning.
  • The Seminoles added two more in the next inning off an RBI triple and a rare home plate robbery.
  • Paaverud put UT on the board in the third when she hit the third home run off the year off Kathryn Sandercock to make the score 3-1. FSU bounced back in the bottom of the third when a triple and first base ground out led to a fourth run.
  • Toledo put three more on in the fourth when Davis singled to right center to bring around Choate and Cozy, making the score 4-3. The Rockets' final run came on a single from sophomore Bekah Yenrick that brought around Davis to tie things up.
  • That score sat at 4-4 until the bottom of the seventh. FSU's Sydney Sherrill hit a leadoff double and was brought around by a double from Shelnutt.
