Toledo Concludes Weekend with 6-2 Win over Bryant

Richmond, Va. -  The Toledo baseball team wrapped up the Spider Invitational on Sunday with a 6-2 win over Bryant.

It was a scoreless affair until the top of the eighth, when the Toledo scored five runs to take the first lead of the game. Bryant answered by scoring two in the bottom half of the eighth, but couldn't muster anything more than that. With the win over the Bulldogs, UT improves to 9-9 on the season.

Junior pitcher Layne Schnitz-Paxton threw seven scoreless innings for the Rockets, allowing just four baserunners and striking out seven, and he retired 15 consecutive batters at one point. Senior Brad Boss went 4-for-5 at the plate and drove in two runs, while fellow senior Riley Campbell tallied three hits and scored twice.

Toledo plays its first home game this Wednesday against Lawrence Tech at 3:05 p.m. The Rockets then open up MAC play with a three-game series at Bowling Green next weekend.

How it Happened
  • Schnitz-Paxton was outstanding, throwing seven scoreless innings and allowing just three hits with no walks. After letting up a single in the first inning and hitting a batter in the second, Schnitz-Paxton retired 15 straight batters.
  • Bryant's first offensive threat came in the bottom of the seventh. The Bulldogs led off the frame with a base hit up the middle, then put runners at the corners with an infield single. Schnitz-Paxton induced a harmless fly ball to left field for the final out of the inning.
  • The Rockets hung five runs on the board in the top of the eighth. Boss ripped a bases-loaded single into right field to bring home the first run of the game, and Servello drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. Ryan worked a 10-pitch at-bat that ended in another bases-loaded walk, then Meyers and Schwartzenberger drove in runs four and five.
  • A two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the eighth gave Bryant its first runs of the day and made the score 5-2.
  • Boss added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, singling home Campbell to put UT ahead 6-2.
