Kissimmee, Fla.— The Toledo baseball team won its rubber match against Bucknell on Sunday by a score of 10-1 to conclude its spring break trip.
The Bison scored first, but the Rockets poured on 10 unanswered runs to clinch the series and improve to 7-7 on the season.
Junior
Michael Ryan had the big swing, launching a three-run home run in the seventh inning. Sophomore
John Servello went 3-for-4 and scored twice, and freshman
Darryn Davis tallied a couple hits and scored twice as well. Junior
Layne Schnitz-Paxton was great on the mound for UT, throwing six innings and striking out six while allowing just the one run. Seniors
Luke Schaefer and
Nate Haugh provided good pitching out of the bullpen.
After 11 days on the road, Toledo heads home for a few days before a midweek contest at Wright State, followed by a weekend tournament at the University of Richmond.
How it Happened
- Bucknell scored its lone run in the top of the second to grab its only lead of the day. With runners at the corners, the Bison runner on first broke for second. The runner on third then headed home and slid in safely to put UT behind, 1-0.
- Freshman Ryan Thompson put the Rockets ahead with a two-run double in the bottom of the second, and fellow rookie Thomas Eitniear doubled down the line in right field to drive home Thompson. Toledo led 3-1 after two frames.
- Schnitz-Paxton recorded inning-ending strikeouts in his first three innings of work, causing Bucknell to strand five total runners on base in that timeframe.
- Ryan slugged his first dinger of the season in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Davis and Servello.
- The Rockets reached double-digits for the second straight game thanks to their four-run eighth inning. Eitniear scored on a balk, sophomore Chris Meyers scored on a fielding error, and both he and Davis recorded RBI base hits to cap the scoring for the day.
