TOLEDO, Ohio - Toledo (17-9, 9-6 MAC) will wrap up its home schedule against Mid-American Conference West Division rival Northern Illinois (17-10, 9-6 MAC) on Saturday, March 2. Tip-off time is set for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and can be streamed on ESPN3.
Prior to tomorrow's crucial division match-up, UT's four seniors - Mikaela Boyd, Kaayla McIntyre, Sarah St-Fort and Mae Tshitenge - will be honored.
UT is currently in a three-way tie for fifth place with Kent State (16-10, 9-6 MAC) and NIU in the overall MAC standings with only three regular-season contests remaining.
Unfortunately for the Rockets, they do not currently own the tiebreaker against either the Golden Flashes or the Huskies, as they dropped a 58-47 home decision vs. KSU on Jan. 12 and suffered a 54-52 road setback at NIU on Feb. 16.Â
If the MAC Tournament started before tomorrow's home finale, UT would be the No. 7 seed and host No. 10 seed Western Michigan (9-17, 3-12 MAC) in a first-round contest on Monday, March 11.Â
The Rockets enter Saturday's contest following back-to-back wins against Ball State (7-20, 2-13 MAC), 63-62, last Saturday, Feb. 23 and WMU, 73-63, on Wednesday.
Boyd led three Rockets in double figures with 22 points against the Broncos, surpassing the 20-point plateau for the second time this year and eighth time as a member of the Midnight Blue & Gold.
Senior Kaayla McIntyre added 14 points and five helpers in a season-high 36 minutes, while junior Sara Rokkanen tied her season high with 13 points off the bench to help UT secure its 11th-consecutive triumph vs. WMU.
Toledo also benefited from junior Mariella Santucci, who nearly recorded the second triple-double in school history. Santucci finished with nine points, a game-high nine boards and a contest-best seven dimes in 39 minutes.
As a team, the Rockets shot a respectable 52.7 percent (29-of-55) from the field, held a commanding 38-28 rebounding advantage, and finished with 22 assists on 29 field goals.
Overall this year, UT possesses a balanced attack with McIntyre, sophomore Nakiah Black, Boyd and Santucci averaging 16.0, 10.5, 10.1 and 9.5 ppg, respectively. This quartet accounts for 69.1 percent (1,188-of-1,719) of Toledo's scoring.
Toledo, which is 10-3 at home, will battle a Northern Illinois squad that is coming off a 70-60 home victory against Eastern Michigan (12-14, 5-10 MAC) on Wednesday. All-MAC candidate Mikayla Voigt led four Huskies in double figures with 27 points while playing all 40 minutes. Myia Starks added 16 points and Ally May finished with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
NIU features an offense with three players scoring at least 11.5 points per game, led by Voigt's 19.6 ppg, the fourth-highest mark in the MAC. The Huskies are 5-8 away home.
Tomorrow's MAC West Division match-up will pit UT's stingy defense against NIU's efficient offense. Toledo is currently leading the league in scoring defense (59.9 ppg), overall field-goal percentage defense (.382, 332-of-870) and three-point field-goal percentage defense (.276, 72-of-261) in conference games, while Northern Illinois is sixth (68.4 ppg), 10th (.396, 385-of-973) and fifth (.319, 115-of-360) in the same categories, respectively. In addition, the Rockets are surrendering a league-low 4.8 triples (72) per contest, while the Huskies are making 5.6 treys (84).
UT and NIU will meet for the second time in the last two weeks and 56th time overall. Toledo leads the all-time series, 34-21, and has won five of the last eight contests against its division rival. UT also holds a 20-5 advantage in games played in Savage Arena, including a 9-1 mark under head coach Tricia Cullop.
A year ago, the Rockets secured a 63-60 home win against the Huskies before 3,716 fans in Savage Arena (Jan. 13).Â
Following tomorrow's home finale, the Rockets will travel to Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, March 6. The opening tip against the Eagles is slated for 7:00 p.m. in the Convocation Center and will be shown on ESPN+.
UT and EMU will meet for the second time this year and 84th time overall. The Rockets secured an impressive 63-43 home triumph against the Eagles on Feb. 9 before 4,076 fans in Savage Arena.
A season ago, UT dropped a 70-57 road decision vs. EMU in the Convocation Center (Jan. 6).
