Toledo Wins Wild Opening Day Contest at Winthrop, 5-4

Rock Hill, S.C.— The University of Toledo baseball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth to win a wild game at Winthrop on Friday to kick off the 2019 season.

UT took an early lead, but the Eagles scored twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh to go ahead, 4-2. But the Rockets stormed back in the top of the ninth, tallying three runs to take a 5-4 lead. Winthrop loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth to make things interesting, but UT held on to move to 1-0 on the season.

"That was a great team win," head coach Cory Mee said. "The excitement of being here and playing a quality opponent in Winthrop, and getting a great come-from-behind win is a great feeling."

Freshman Darryn Davis had the big hit, plating two runs with a double in the ninth inning. Freshman Ryan Thompson, sophomore Zach Schwartzenberger, and junior Michael Ryan all drove in runs for the Midnight Blue and Gold as well. Senior Michael Jacob threw six innings, striking out three and walking just one. The southpaw started the game with five shutout innings.

"Opening Day is always exciting, no matter where you are," Mee said. "I think the guys handled it really well. The toughest part about opening weekend is coming back the next day with the same intensity that you had during that first game. We'll need to be ready to come to play tomorrow."

Due to impending rainy weather on Sunday, the Rockets and Eagles will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.

How it Happened
  • Toledo struck first with a run in the top of the second. Thompson's double drove home Schwartzenberger to give UT a 1-0 lead.
  • Winthrop's first offensive threat came in the bottom of the third. The Eagles put runners on first and second with one out, but Jacob worked his way out of trouble. A couple nice plays from sophomore Chris Meyers at shortstop ended the threat.
  • Schwartzenberger ripped a double to right field in the top of the fifth that scored Meyers and put the Rockets ahead, 2-0.
  • Winthrop cut into Toledo's lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Eagles recorded a couple hits to start the inning, and a single up the middle gave them their first run of the afternoon. An RBI double followed to tie the score at 2-2.
  • The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. A leadoff triple got things going, then an RBI single and a run-scoring fielder's choice plated runs for Winthrop and put UT in a two-run hole.
  • Toledo's ninth-inning comeback started with a leadoff walk from sophomore John Servello, who advance to third on a single from Meyers. Ryan laced a single to left field that plated Servello, then Davis placed a double down the left field line to bring in two runs and put UT ahead, 5-4.
  • Winthrop nearly spoiled the Rockets' night by loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but senior Nate Haugh worked his way out of the jam and escaped the inning unscathed.
