Game Recap: Softball |

Rockets Grounded by Drake, SEMO

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Toledo Softball dropped two close games in Cedar Falls, Iowa today on day two of the UNI-Dome Classic. The Rockets fell 11-10 to Drake and 7-5 to Southeast Missouri.

Game 1
The Rockets' first game of the day was an offensive shootout from the beginning, with 16 of the game's 22 runs coming in the first three innings. Junior Samantha Golden had herself a day, hitting 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. She was joined by sophomore Kylie Norwood who went 2-for-4 and also brought in three for UT.

  • UT got on the board first thanks to a Norwood single in the second that allowed sophomores Ami Ill and Bekah Yenrick to score. Senior Megan Choate made contact right after that, bringing in Golden.
  • Drake responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs of their own thanks to a homer from Alexia Lara.
  • UT went on a tear in the third, scoring five thanks to an error from the pitcher, a single from Golden, a sac fly from Norwood, a single from Choate, and a single from senior Katie Cozy.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on multiple mistakes from Toledo. The Bulldogs got six of their runs from a series of walks, passed balls and wild pitches to even the score at eight apiece.
  • A fourth inning triple from Golden seemed to seal UT's victory as she brought in Ill and junior Morgan Paaverud to make the score 10-8. Drake was unable to score for two innings, but the Rockets' lead dissolved in the sixth when the Bulldog's Newman pounded in a three-run homer over the left field fence that was never answered.

Game 2
The second game of the day was highlighted by performances from senior Heather Webb and sophomore Brittney Davis. Webb was finally able to get her feet under her after struggling in Toledo's previous three outings, while Davis was an offensive machine.

Webb started the day with razor sharp focus, get three-straight batters to strike out swinging. She would go on to finish the day with six total strikeouts and only gave up one run through three innings and 60 pitches of work. Davis went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and one walk.

  • Toledo started out hot with a lead off home run from Norwood.
  • SEMO took the lead in the bottom of the first frame after Parker Bandy tripled and brought in two. The lead was inflated moments later when Ashley Ellis hit a ground rule double that brought in Bandy.
  • A second inning triple from Rachel Anderson allowed another runner to score for SEMO.
  • In the third, Addison Barnouski singled and then got an extra base off an error from UT's senior catcher Kaitlyn Bergman. The play brought two more in for the Redhawks.
  • The Rockets started a resurgence in the fourth off a two run home run from Davis that made things 6-4, but SEMO responded with another bag in the fifth.
  • The sixth featured an impressive offensive showing from UT. Davis singled in the leadoff spot, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ill singled to left field, advancing Davis, then Taylor Weekly brought in Davis.
  • UT's final run of the day came in the seventh inning when Bekah Yenrick popped up a sac fly that allowed Megan Choate to sprint in from third base. Despite the late game rally, Toledo wasn't able to fight back into the contest.
