TOLEDO, Ohio - Toledo (12-6, 4-3 MAC) returns to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 2 against Bowling Green (7-11, 0-7 MAC) looking to win its seventh-consecutive game versus its arch rival. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be streamed on ESPN3.
UT downed BGSU in the first meeting this season, 79-65, on Jan. 19 in the Stroh Center.
In conjunction with tomorrow's Mid-American Conference cross-division showdown, Toledo will hold its 13th-annual 'Rockets for the Cure' day. The event will help benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Northwest Ohio, the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center and the University of Toledo Center for Health and Successful Living. The Rockets encourage everyone in attendance to wear pink in support of cancer research.
Last season, the Rockets raised $12,315 for cancer research, marking the ninth-straight season they collected at least $10,000. In addition, four of UT's uniforms that were auctioned off after the game went for at least $900, including a high of $1,200 for senior
Mikaela Boyd.
UT will be looking to rebound from a tough 70-64 overtime road setback at Akron last Saturday.
Megan Sefcik scored 15 of her game-high 29 points in the extra period to help the Zips put an end to a three-game losing streak against the Rockets.
Toledo led, 53-49, with 3:17 left in regulation, but Akron scored the final four points to send the game into overtime. Sefcik then accounted for all but two of UA's points in the extra period to stop a three-game losing skid.Â
Senior
Kaayla McIntyre paced the Rockets with 17 points, followed by senior
Mikaela Boyd with 15 and sophomore
Tanaya Beacham with a season-tying best 10. UT also received nine points each from junior
Mariella Santucci and sophomore
Nakiah Black, but it just was not enough against the Zips (12-6, 3-4 MAC).
Toledo, which is 6-2 at home, continues to be fueled offensively by the quartet of McIntyre, Santucci, Boyd and Black, who are averaging 15.4, 10.4, 10.4 and 9.2 ppg, respectively.
Bowling Green, which had its home contest vs. Central Michigan on Wednesday postponed due to inclement weather, enters tomorrow's match-up in the midst of a seven-game losing streak, most recently suffering an 82-79 home setback vs. Ohio last Saturday. Sydney Lambert paced the Falcons with a game-high 23 points and 10 boards, followed closely by Morgan McMillen and Andrea Cecil with 20 and 17 points, respectively.
Bowling Green, which is 2-7 away from home, possesses an offense with four players averaging at least 12.0 points per game led by McMillen's and Cecil's 15.5 and 14.9 ppg, respectively.
Tomorrow's MAC cross-division contest will pit UT's stingy perimeter defense against BGSU's efficient outside shooting.Â
Toledo is currently sixth in the league in three-point field-goal percentage defense (.314, 106-of-338) and second in scoring defense (60.1 ppg), while Bowling Green is tied for first in three-point field-goals made per game (10.0, 182) and third in three-point field-goal percentage (.355, 182-of-512), respectively. In addition, the Rockets are surrendering 5.9 (106) triples per contest, the third-lowest mark in the conference.
BGSU leads the all-time series, 42-36, but UT has won nine of the last 10 meetings. The Midnight Blue & Gold has also won four of the last five versus Bowling Green at home and holds a 19-14 advantage in games played in Lucas County. Â Â
Two years ago, Toledo registered a 74-59 home win against BGSU in Savage Arena (Feb. 11).Â
The Falcons' last victory against Toledo occurred on Feb. 2, 2014 when they escaped Savage Arena with a 66-59 road triumph, a span of 1,825 days.
Following tomorrow's MAC cross-division match-up, the Rockets will tangle with reigning MAC East Division champion Buffalo (14-4, 6-1 MAC) on Wednesday, Feb. 6. The opening tip against the Bulls is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Alumni Arena and will be shown on ESPN+.
UT and UB will meet for the only time this year and 29th time overall. Toledo leads the all-time series, 22-6, and has won four of the last six meetings against its cross-division foe. UT also holds an 8-5 edge in games played in Alumni Arena.Â
A year ago, the Bulls swept the regular-season series, claiming an 87-69 home victory (Jan. 20) and an 84-73 road triumph (Feb. 3) to stop UT's four-game winning streak in the series.
