Fairborn, Ohio - The Toledo women's soccer team (0-1-1) played to a 1-1 tie on the road at Wright State today. Senior captain
Hannah Scafaria scored her second goal of the season late in the second half to tie the contest.
Ā
"I think we got better today," head coach
TJ Buchholz said. "The key is we went down a goal but we had good possession. We had our moments and I think we just need to finish. I told the group that we need to get to two goals. If you get two goals today, then it's a different story because only getting one is not going to do it at this level. I'm proud of them though. We could've folded but we battled right back. Kudos to them for staying composed in the moment."
Ā
Scafaria's goal today was her second of the weekend. The captain netted Toledo's lone goal against Xavier on Friday.
Ā
"I'm just here to try and help the team win," Scafaria said. "I have great players behind me who played me balls in and made my job easier. I wish we could've gotten some wins this weekend but I know it's a work in progress."
Ā
The Rockets opened with a strong offensive presence. Toledo kept play within the final third throughout the opening minutes but the Raiders refused to let anything through.
Ā
Freshman
Ashton Cassel setup UT's first real scoring threat in the 20th minute when she fired a shot from the right edge. WSU's Maddie Jewell stood tall in net though and cradled the chance.
Ā
Toledo continued to pepper the box from the right edge thanks in part to senior captain
Regan Price slipping down the touch line and sending in good-looking crosses, but nothing ever materialized.
Ā
The Raiders tried to get their offense going as well but freshman
Lexa Bauer and the Toledo defense blocked or turned away almost every attempt. Thanks to the defense's lights-out play, sophomore goalkeeper
Madison Perrin only had to make one save in the first half.
Ā
Toledo came out strong in the second half with sophomore
Anita Mancini quickly putting two shots on frame in the opening minutes. WSU opened scoring in the 64th minute with Aaliyah Patten beating Perrin to the left off a slotted pass to make it 1-0.
Ā
The Rockets quickly retaliated in the 70th minute thanks to Scafaria. Scafaria put two shots on frame in the 66th minute before sophomore
Claire Cahalan fed her a through ball in the midfield. The pass allowed Scafaria to go on a breakaway which resulted in a clean beat of the keeper to tie things up.
Ā
Toledo continued to put shots on net, with sophomore
Alex Troy and freshman
Payton Sullivan each putting up attempts in the 72nd and 86th minutes, respectively. The Raiders and the Rockets continued to battle through the remainder of regulation but the clock wound down before another ball entered the net. The match shifted to overtime but neither side gave an inch, leading to the 1-1 draw.
