AKRON, Ohio - Junior
Heather Webb threw 5.2 no-hit innings, but a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning gave Ball State a 2-0 victory Friday evening, ending Toledo's Mid-American Conference Tournament run. The Rockets' record drops to 34-21 on the season.
"I'm very proud of our team and how we played this week," said Toledo head coach
Kristen Butler. "Winning two games in the tournament is an accomplishment for the program and hopefully this leads to more success in years to come. We battled and we've worked from behind all year. Winning a game in the loser's bracket and never quitting shows that we have true competitors."
Webb allowed two earned runs on just one hit and four walks. After a one-out walk in the first inning, Webb retired a string of 15-straight Ball State batters to keep the Cardinals scoreless until their sixth inning rally.
Ball State 2, Toledo 0
A two-out, two-run single by Ball State in the bottom of the sixth inning was the lone hit in the contest and only scoring play of the night.Â
The Rockets drew five walks and one hit-by-pitch in the game, but were held hitless by the BSU duo of Carolyn Wilmes and Aeshia Miles.
How it Happened
- In a game with no hits and no errors through five innings, the base-on-balls accounted for all the base runners early for both teams.
- Freshmen Bailey Curry and Bekah Yenrick drew back-to-back two-out walks in the first to give the Rockets their first scoring chance.
- Junior Heather Webb issued a one-out walk in the first inning before retiring 15-straight batters.
- Yenrick walked again to lead off the fourth and junior pinch runner Taylor Powell was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. The scoring chance came to a close with two key strikeouts to end the inning.
- Norwood walked for the second time in the game to start the sixth, stole second with one out, but was left stranded as the third out was recorded.
- Ball State walked the bases loaded in the sixth and scored a pair of runs on a bloop single down the left field line by Janae Hogg.
The Rockets will wait for a call from the National Invitational Softball Championship in hopes of receiving a tournament bid next week.
