Rockets Defeat Eastern Michigan, 5-2, on Cold Day at Scott Park

TOLEDO, Ohio - Low temperatures and a steady drizzle could not stop the Rockets' bats from heating up in the late innings en route to a 5-2 win over Eastern Michigan on Tuesday at Scott Park. With the win, Toledo improves its record to 22-13 overall and 6-1 in the Mid-American Conference.

The Rockets scored three runs in their final two at bats to pull away from the Eagles in the late innings. Toledo collected eight hits including four doubles on the way to its third-straight win.

Senior Ashley Rausch continued her recent tear with two hits in three plate appearances and an a go-ahead RBI in the first inning. Freshman Kylie Norwood set the table for UT with a 2-for-3 day and scoring a pair of runs.

Junior hurler Kailey Minarchick, who was named MAC West Pitcher of the Week prior to the game, threw all 7.0 innings for Toledo. Minarchick allowed just two runs, one earned, on two hits while striking out five.

How it Happened
  • Freshman Ebony Garza reached on a fielder's choice in the first inning and freshman Bailey Curry followed with a single up the middle. With two outs, Rausch laced a base hit through the left side to score Garza and give Toledo a 1-0 start.
  • Eastern Michigan tied the scoring at 1-1 in the next half inning. A lead off single, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single up the middle manufactured a score for the Eagles.
  • Toledo regained the lead in the home half as junior Megan Choate sparked the inning with a lead off double. Choate advanced to third and also scored on sacrifice bunts. Senior Sam Showalter was credited with the RBI as Choate raced home.
  • EMU made it four-straight scores and tied the contest again with a tally in the top of the third. After two outs in the inning, a walk, a stolen base and a Toledo error netted Eastern Michigan a run.
  • UT took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Norwood singled, went to second on a ground out and to third on a wild pitch. After Curry was intentionally walked, junior Katie Cozy lifted a deep sacrifice fly to bring in Norwood.
  • The Rockets added two runs for good measure in the sixth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Norwood and Garza.
Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to approaching thunderstorms . The Rockets will stay at home to host I-75 rival Bowling Green for three games on April 6-7.
