Toledo’s Weekend Ends with 13-3 Loss to Kent State

Toledo, Ohio— The Toledo baseball team dropped its series finale against Kent State on Sunday, 13-3.

Senior Dalton Bollinger accounted for all three Toledo runs with a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the eighth. Freshman Jacob Youngpeter started on the mound for UT and senior Alex Wagner, sophomore Austin Calopietro, and sophomore Layne Schnitz-Paxton all contributed out of the bullpen.

The Golden Flashes led from the start of the game after scoring three runs in the top of the first. Kent State scored in seven of its nine innings at the plate to build a substantial lead over the Rockets. KSU hitters were a perfect 9-for-9 at the plate when leading off an inning.

Next up for the Rockets is a three-game series in DeKalb, Ill. to face Northern Illinois next weekend.

How it Happened
  • Kent State scored three runs in the top of the first to grab an early lead. An RBI single that snuck through the right side of the infield, a fielding error, and a passed ball accounted for the three KSU runs.
  • Two more runs crossed the plate in the top of the second, and the Golden Flashes earned them all this time. A triple to right center field and a single to left field pushed Toledo into a 5-0 hole.
  • The Rockets allowed one run in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth to fall behind 9-0.
  • The top of the sixth was the first inning in which Kent State did not score. Defensively, junior Ross Adolph started an 8-3 double play by tracking down a fly ball and ended it with a laser throw to double off the runner at first base.
  • Three RBI singles in the top of the seventh pushed the Golden Flashes into double digits, making the score 12-0.
  • Toledo put a crooked number on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth. Senior Corey Tipton led off the frame with a double down the line in left field, while singles from Adolph and freshman Trace Hatfield followed. Bollinger then drove a 1-2 pitch into left field that scored all three runs easily.
  • Kent State's last run of the day came on a bases loaded walk in the top of the ninth.
