Toledo Splits Doubleheader at EMU to Win Season Series

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Toledo softball team split its midweek doubleheader at Eastern Michigan to claim its fourth-straight Mid-American Conference series win. The Rockets' record runs to 26-14 overall and 10-2 in conference, while EMU is now 7-29 overall, 3-9 in the MAC.

Eastern Michigan 10, Toledo 9
The Rockets rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but came up one run short in their comeback attempt. Toledo was done in by a big six-run fourth inning by Eastern Michigan.

Senior Ashley Rausch went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Rockets. Junior Megan Choate also had two hits and knocked in a pair of runs for UT.

How it Happened
  • Eastern Michigan put Toledo in a 2-0 deficit just three batters into the game. A single and a two-run home run plated the runs for EMU.
  • The Rockets fired back with a run in the bottom of the inning. Freshmen Kylie Norwood and Bailey Curry both walked and junior Katie Cozy bunted the runners into scoring position. Freshman Bekah Yenrick lifted a sacrifice fly down the left field line to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
  • Toledo tied the score at 2-2 in the third. Rausch singled and stole second before scoring on an RBI single by freshman Brittney Davis.
  • The Eagles batted around to score six runs on five hits and take an 8-2 lead in the fourth inning.
  • EMU added an unearned run in the sixth to extend the margin to seven, 9-2, its largest of the game.
  • Toledo answered with a run in the bottom half. Norwood walked, advanced two bases on ground outs and scored on a passed ball. The Eagles answered right back with a solo home to keep a seven run lead, 10-3.
  • Most of the Rockets' damage in the seventh was done with two outs. Rausch, freshman Taylor Weekly and Choate each recorded two-out, RBI singles to extend the rally.
  • The Rockets left the winning run in scoring position when the final out was recorded.

Toledo 12, Eastern Michigan 6
The Rockets pounded out a season-high 16 hits and scored in all seven inning on their way to a dozen runs. Five different batters in the Toledo lineup recorded multiple hits and four more entered the hit column with one.

Junior Megan Choate hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning and freshman Bailey Curry hit her dozenth blast, a two-run shot in the seventh, to lead the Rockets. Senior Ashley Rausch went 4-for-5 with a double in the win.

Junior Kailey Minarchick tossed her eighth complete game en route to her 13th win of the season. Minarchick allowed six runs, two earned, on eight hits and a walk.

How it Happened
  • The Rockets jumped out front with a three spot in the opening inning. Curry and Rausch both singled to lead off the game and freshman Bekah Yenrick drove in the games' first run with an RBI base hit. With two outs, freshman Taylor Weekly lined a two-run single to left center to put the Rockets up 3-0.
  • Toledo made it 4-0 on an RBI single by freshman Brittney Davis that scored freshman Ebony Garza in the second inning.
  • Eastern Michigan plated two runs, one earned and one unearned, in the bottom of the second to cut the Rocket lead in half.
  • A pinch hit appearance by sophomore Samantha Golden proved advantageous as Golden singled in Weekly in the third frame to go up 5-2.
  • The Eagles would not go away and scored two in the bottom half again to make the score 5-4.
  • In the fourth, Rausch notched another single and Yenrick was hit by a pitch to put two aboard in front of Choate. Choate's three-run homer down the right field line staked the Midnight Blue & Gold to an 8-4 advantage.
  • Toledo continued to score two runs for every one by EMU. The Rockets scored one in the fifth on an RBI double by Rausch and one in the sixth on a throwing error by the Eagles.
  • Curry's seventh-inning home run with junior Kaitlyn Bergman on first base plated runs 11 and 12 for the Rockets.
  • EMU was able to scratch together a tally in the last half inning to bring the final score to 12-6.
The Rockets will play host to Northern Illinois for a three-game series on April 13-14. All three games will be streamed on ESPN3 from Scott Park.
