EUGENE, Ore. - The Toledo softball team gave a valiant effort but fell short in two games at the Oregon Invitational on Friday. The Rockets were defeated in a high-scoring game, 15-6, by Weber State, and in a pitchers' duel, 1-0, by Montana. Toledo's record falls below the .500 mark for the first time this season at 10-11 overall.
Weber State 15, Toledo 6
Freshman
Bailey Curry hit a pair of home runs, including her third grand slam of the season, to account for all of Toledo's runs in an 11-6 loss to Weber State. Curry has now hit four home run in the last six games.Â
Sophomore
Leah Allison did not allow an earned run on two hits in 1.1 innings of relief for the Rockets. The Rockets were plagued with six errors.
How it Happened
- Weber State took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. An error and two walks loaded the bases. The Wildcats scored the run on an RBI groundout to second base.
- Curry came to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the first inning and tied the score, 1-1, with a home run to left field.
- Weber State batted around to score five runs in the third inning to break the game open. A solo home run followed by three-straight hits put two rounds on the board. A bases-loaded walk, an RBI single and an RBI ground out added to the inning to make the score 6-1.
- A second bases-loaded walk to WSU made the score 7-1 in the fourth. In the fifth, a sacrifice flu and a three-run home run pushed the Toledo deficit to 11-1.
- The Rockets staved off the end of the game with Curry's second blast of the game. An error, a single by freshman Kylie Norwood and a walk to freshman Maddie Emery loaded the bases for Curry. Curry's second round tripper of the game cut the margin to six runs, 11-5.
- Weber State batted around again in the seventh inning to score four runs, two unearned, to take a 10-run lead to the final half inning.
- Freshman Brittney Davis and junior Katie Cozy each doubled in the bottom of the seventh to score the Rockets final run of the contest.
Montana 1, Toledo 0
Junior
Heather Webb allowed one run on five hits in 6.0 innings, but took the tough-luck loss as the Rockets were shut out for just the second time this year. Senior
Ashley Rausch led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to right field for Toledo's only hit of the game.
How it HappenedÂ
- Webb worked around a lead-off single and a pair of errors in the first inning to keep the game scoreless and leave the bases loaded.
- Webb retired the side in order in the second and worked around UT's third error to blank Montana in the third.
- Montana scored the lone run of the night on a one-out triple and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth frame.
- Rausch broke up the Grizzlies' perfect game with her single in the sixth. A sacrifice bunt moved Rausch to second with two outs where she was stranded.
The Rockets will look to get back on track tomorrow with games against Bryant (9:30 a.m.) and Montana (2:30 p.m.).
