Irvine, Calif. - The Toledo women's tennis team won a 4-3 decision over UC-Irvine today to close out their road trip to California with a 2-1 record. The Rockets moved to 9-3 in dual matches with the victory.
Head coach Tracy Mauntler was proud of the way her team rebounded after dropping the doubles point.
"When you lose the doubles point, there is so much pressure with the singles matches," Mauntler said. "I'm extremely happy with how hard we fought to scrape out those singles matches.
"To beat such a quality team without the doubles point means a lot and I can see all the hard work the girls are putting in is paying off," Mauntler added.
Toledo lost the doubles point to start the match, but bounced back with strong performances in the singles competition. The Rockets struggled in the beginning of the singles competition but managed to fight their way back as the matches progressed. Junior Thalita Rodrigues was down 4-1 in her first set in the No. 6 spot, but came back to win her match 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Dee Dee Leenabanchong was down 5-3 in the first set of her No. 2 match, but fought back to also win her match 7-6 (0-4), 6-3.
Junior Kokoro Chishaki swept her opponent in two sets, winning her No. 4 singles match 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Mimi Kendall-Woseley won the No. 1 singles match by scores of 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Toledo returns to action on March 17 when the team hosts Illinois-Chicago at noon.
