UT Drops Overtime Decision vs. KSU in First Round of MAC Tourney, 80-76

TOLEDO, Ohio - Junior Kaayla McIntyre had 18 points but it wasn't enough, as Kent State rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit to defeat No. 7 seed Toledo, 80-76, in overtime on Monday in first-round MAC Tournament action at Savage Arena.

The Rockets (17-14) trailed 79-76 in the waning seconds when sophomore Mariella Santucci's three-point attempt went wide with five ticks remaining. KSU's Alexa Golden, who was fouled after grabbing the rebound, made one of two free throws to seal the road win for the No. 10 seeded Golden Flashes.

Santucci, who contributed 14 points and five assists, helped Toledo build a 36-26 halftime lead with a career-tying best three triples in the opening two quarters. The 2017 MAC Champions built their lead to a game-high 17 points, 53-36, with 2:17 left in the third period on a three-pointer by senior Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott. Unfortunately for the Midnight Blue & Gold, Kent State rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime and eventually come out on top.
 
KSU (13-18) was led by sophomore Megan Carter who registered 24 points and six rebounds off the bench. Carter was helped by seniors Jordan Korinek and Naddiyah Cross who recorded 21 and 20 points, respectively. The Golden Flashes will now advance to play No. 2 seed and MAC East Division champion Buffalo on Wednesday in Cleveland.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st period recap
  • Kent State jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Rockets responded with a 13-5 run keyed by a pair of three-pointers by Mariella Santucci to give UT a 13-9 lead with 3:44 left in the quarter.
  • KSU regained the advantage, 16-14, on a jumper by Megan Carter. UT redshirt freshman Tanaya Beacham knotted the score at 16-16 on a layup.
2nd period recap
  • KSU regained the lead, 21-18, on a jumper by Carter.
  • Toledo went on an 18-2 run, capped by a three-pointer by junior Olivia Cunningham with 2:37 left in the half to put UT in front 36-23. Kent State snapped the run with a three by Carter, pulling the visitors to within 10 at the break, 36-26.
3rd period recap
  • The Golden Flashes fought back in the third, registering 21 points to the Rockets 17.
  • Boyd became the second player to hit double digits in the contest, opening the scoring in the third quarter with a layup from McIntyre.
4th period recap
  • McIntyre entered the 1,000-point club at the 8:32 mark, scoring a layup to put the Rockets up by six points, 57-51.
  • KSU utilized a 19-7 run over the course of the final two periods to set trim UT's lead to two points, 60-58.
  • KSU continued to fight back and closed the margin to one point on a couple occasions in the final minute, but UT was able to hold off KSU until 27.1 seconds left in regulation when the Golden Flashes knotted the score at 70-70.
  • Toledo's Boyd gave a shimmer of hope in the last four seconds when she gave the home team a two-point lead, but KSU's Carter sunk two free throws to send the game to overtime.
Overtime
  • Neither team held more than a two-point lead throughout overtime, until KSU forced a three-point lead off free throws from Korinek.
  • Santucci had a good look at a three-point shot with nine seconds left, but her shot sailed wide. Kent State's Golden caught the rebound and sunk her free throws to secure the Golden Flashes' victory.
