UT Falls Short at MSU in Second Round of Postseason WNIT, 68-66

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Toledo saw its season come to an end with a 68-66 setback at Big Ten member Michigan State on Monday in the second round of the Postseason WNIT in the Breslin Center. With the loss, the Rockets wrap up the year with an 18-15 overall mark.

The Spartans' (19-13) Shay Colley converted a layup with 0.7 seconds left in regulation for the game winner. Colley took the inbound pass and drove the ball straight to the basket, finishing on the right side for the game-deciding points. 

Junior Kaayla McIntyre paced the Midnight Blue & Gold with 16 points, a game-high 10 caroms and a team-best five assists to post her ninth double-double on the year.

Redshirt freshman Tanaya Beacham tied her career best with 12 points, to go along with a season-high nine boards in a season-best 31 minutes.

Senior Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott and junior Mikaela Boyd also finished with double figures for the Midnight Blue & Gold with 10 points each.

As a team, the Rockets shot a season-high 56.0 percent (28-of-50) from the field, including 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from three-point land, and 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from the charity stripe.

UT was also magnificent on the glass against the Big Ten Conference member Spartans, finishing with a sizable 35-25 rebounding advantage. The home team came into tonight's affair outrebounding their opposition by 6.2 rpg (41.2-35.0).

Sidney Cooks paced MSU (19-13) with 15 points, followed closely by Colley and Taya Reimer with 14 and 10, respectively.

With the completion of tonight's game, the collegiate careers of seniors Michaela Rasmussen, Jada Woody, Nancy Kessler and Bravo-Harriott came to an end. The quartet were a part of 79 overall victories over the last four seasons, including 42 league wins. They helped the Rockets secure three post-season appearances, including a 2017 Mid-American Conference Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

FIRST QUARTER


* The Spartans scored the game's first seven points, but the Rockets closed the opening 10 minutes on a 7-2 run to trim the deficit to 19-15.

* McIntyre and sophomore Sara Rokkanen scored 11 of UT's 15 points in the period, including two each in the final two minutes to make it a two-possession difference.

SECOND QUARTER

* UT outscored MSU 18-13 in the second stanza to take a 33-32 advantage at the intermission. Five different Rockets tallied points in the quarter, including a team-high five from Bravo-Harriott, to turn a four-point deficit into a one-point lead at the break.

* A big factor in the Rockets' taking the lead was a 9-3 burst midway through the period, triggered by Bravo-Harriott's five points.

THIRD QUARTER

* UT's extended its advantage to a game-high six points on two occasions in the quarter and maintained a 48-45 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes. Boyd and McIntyre scored six points each in the period to help give the visitors assume a three-point cushion.

FOURTH QUARTER

* The teams traded the lead on eight occasions in the final quarter, with neither squad holding more than a four-point lead.

* The Rockets found themselves down 66-62 with only 18 seconds left, but they responded with back-to-back baskets from Boyd and Beacham to set the stage for Colley's last-second layup for the game winner.
