Toledo Falls to Oakland in Eagle Classic Finale

MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Toledo softball team was defeated by Oakland, 6-2, in the final game of the Eagle Classic on Saturday at University Field. The loss drops the Rockets' record to 14-12 on the season and 2-1 on the weekend.

Oakland 6, Toledo 2
UT jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but that was all the scoring the Rockets' offense managed. Oakland scored in each of the final three innings to come from behind and take the win.

Maggie McGurk starter her second game of the season in the circle for Toledo. The freshman allowed one run on three hits and a walk, while striking out four. Senior Ashley Rausch led the offense with an RBI single, while freshmen Kylie Norwood and Ami Ill each recorded a hit and scored a run in defeat.

How it Happened
  • Norwood, Ill and freshman Bailey Curry all singled to start the game and load the bases with no outs. Junior Kaitlyn Bergman walked to force in Toledo first run of the game.
  • Rausch then lined a 2-2 offering off the pitcher and into right field to score Ill from third and make the score 2-0. Oakland got out of the inning with limited damage by turning a 5-2-3 double play.
  • A single, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases against McGurk in the second inning, but a clutch strike out from the right hander ended the scoreless frame.
  • Oakland led off the top of the fifth inning with a double and cut the Rockets' lead in half two batters later with a sacrifice fly.
  • A walk and a Toledo error sparked the Golden Grizzlies' three-run sixth inning, giving Oakland a 4-2 advantage. All three of runs in the inning went in the books as unearned.
  • Oakland added two tallies to its total in the seventh on a leadoff triple, a UT error and an RBI double.
  • Ill reached on an error and Curry walked with two outs, but both runners were left stranded as the game concluded.
The Rockets will play a single non-conference game at Wright State on Tuesday, March 20 before starting Mid-American Conference play at Akron next weekend.
