CLERMONT, Fla. - Junior catcher
Kaitlyn Bergman launched a two-run home run in the seventh inning, but Toledo's comeback attempt fell short in a 3-2 loss to Morgan State on the final day of Dot Richardson's National Collegiate Softball Invitational.
The Rockets (3-2) fell behind in the first inning as the first three Morgan State hitters reached base safely. A double, a walk and a two-run triple plated a pair of runs, and the third Bears' run scored on a throwing error.
Morgan State (1-4) retired the Rockets in order in the first and worked around a two-out double by freshman
Bekah Yenrick in the second to keep Toledo scoreless.Â
Junior
Heather Webb came on in relief of freshman starter
Maggie McGurk to throw 5.0 shutout innings. MSU hurler Stephanie Rundlett matched Webb pitch for pitch to keep UT at bay.
Freshman
Bailey Curry started the Rockets' rally in the final frame with a hard-hit double to the right center field gap. Bergman quickly cleared the bases as the Lebanon, Ohio native hit the first pitch of the at bat out of the park.Â
Senior Sam Showalter continued the surge with a single up the middle, but was left stranded three outs later.
With the loss, the Rockets fall to 3-2 on the year, while Morgan State picks up its first win of the campaign. Toledo will have next weekend off before traveling to Bowling Green, Ky. for a tournament at Western Kentucky.
