Toledo Runs Away from Stony Brook in Second Half, 80-48

TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo outscored Stony Brook by a whopping 30 points in the second half en route to securing an 80-48 victory on Tuesday in Savage Arena. UT posted a commanding 51-21 scoring edge against the Seawolves (10-2) over the final 20 minutes to improve to 7-3 on the season.

The Rockets held a slim 29-27 advantage at intermission before going on a pivotal 17-0 run to take control of tonight's non-conference matchup in the third quarter. The Midnight Blue & Gold also strung together an impressive 22-7 burst to begin the fourth period to snap SBU's 10-game winning streak.

Senior Kaayla McIntyre led the Midnight Blue & Gold with a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Nakiah Black had a season-high 18 points in her first collegiate start.

UT also received nine points from sophomore Tatyana Davis and seven by sophomore Tanaya Beacham to successfully bounce back from a 72-56 setback against defending national champion Notre Dame at home on Dec. 8.

As a team, the Rockets shot a season-high 57.9 percent (33-of-57) from the field, including 50.0 percent (3-of-6) from three-point land, and 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the charity stripe.

Oksana Gouchie-Provencher paced Stony Brook with 13 points, followed closely by Chantz Cherry, India Pagan and Shania Johnson with 11, 10 and 10, respectively.

Johnson, who came into tonight's game leading the country at 9.8 assists per contest, was held to only one and had a game-high six turnovers.

FIRST QUARTER
• The Seawolves looked good early, receiving back-to-back treys from Gouchie-Provencher to give the visitors a 14-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

• UT's McIntyre kept the home team close at the outset with a pair of field goals and two free throws to make it only a two-possession difference.

SECOND QUARTER
• The Rockets started to find their offensive rhythm in the second quarter, taking advantage of five-consecutive points from Black to assume their first lead, 21-20, at the 6:19 mark. The Concord, N.C. native converted a layup and buried a triple in a span of less than two minutes to jump start the offense.

• SBU momentarily knotted the score at 22-22, but UT responded with layups from Beacham and McIntyre, as well as a three-point field goal by Davis to take a 29-27 advantage at halftime.

• McIntyre paced Toledo with 12 points in the opening 20 minutes, while Black had seven to give the home team a lead they would not give up.

THIRD QUARTER
• UT blew the game open by scoring the first 17 points after intermission to stretch its margin to 46-27 at the 3:08 mark. Black and senior Mikaela Boyd spearheaded the game-changing rally by tallying all but four points to force SBU to burn two timeouts. Black accounted for seven points in the burst, while Boyd had six to bring the home crowd to its feet.

• SBU did not score until 2:46 was left in the quarter, and the visitors totaled only 10 points to make the score 53-37 heading into the final period.

FOURTH QUARTER
• Toledo then put the contest out of reach on the strength of four layups from McIntyre and a pair by Black. In total, the Rockets scored 22 of the quarter's first 29 points to put the contest out of reach.

UP NEXT
• Toledo will wrap up non-conference play against Horizon League member Detroit Mercy (2-8) on Friday, Dec. 21. The opening tip against the Titans is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be shown on ESPN+.

• UT and UDM will square off for the sixth time in the last seven years and 29th time overall. The Rockets hold a 19-9 advantage in the all-time series and have won six of the last seven meetings, including an 81-64 road triumph on Dec. 21, 2017.
