Bowling Green, Ohio – The Toledo women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to Bowling Green today in the Rockets' final match of the season. With the loss, Toledo is bumped from the Mid-American Conference postseason tournament and will not defend its championship title.
How it happened
The Rockets took an early lead seven minutes into the match off a header from senior captain
Hannah Scafaria. Freshman
Ashton Cassel played a cross that bounced to Scafaria, and the captain nodded it to the right post to put UT up 1-0.
The Falcons pushed back after the goal, putting up five shots of their own and controlling possession for the remainder of the half. UT defended its goal though and entered the halftime break up 1-0.
Both sides came out of halftime eager to put more points on the board. UT struggled to fight through BGSU's midfield and was limited to outside crosses. Bowling Green kept on and managed to tie things up in the 65th minute. The Falcons' Maureen Kennedy played in a long cross from the left corner of the 18-yard box that bounced left of sophomore goalkeeper
Madison Perrin. BGSU's Sarah Allen followed up on the chance and was able to place it to make the score 1-1.
Bowling Green's game-winning goal came in the 81st minute off a penalty kick. The UT defense attempted to shut down a dangerous run-in, but they were too forceful in their attempt. Kennedy stepped up to the dot for her side and shot it left of Perrin, beating her with ease.
Toledos recorded two shots in the final minutes, but were unable to equalize before the final whistle. The loss marks the first time since 2007 that the Falcons have defeated the Rockets.
UT ends its season with a record of 8-9-2. Scafaria finished the year with 14 goals, second-most in program history and the most by a Rocket since Molly Cornwell scored 15 in 2007.
