TOLEDO, Ohio - Senior forward
Sophie Pohl registered the first goal of the match and added an assist as Toledo rolled to a 3-1 win over Miami in the its Mid-American Conference opener on Friday at Scott Park.Â
The Rockets (4-4-1, 1-0-0 MAC) jumped ahead early in the contest when junior
Alena Sidwell centered a cross from the right side that Pohl deposited with her head in the sixth minute.Â
UT controlled the remainder of the first half, out-shooting the RedHawks 8-4 in the frame. Toledo took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
On the other side of the break, pin-point passing by seniors
Christina Williams and
Isa Echeverri led to the first career goal by freshman
Anita Mancini in the 66th minute. Williams centered the ball to Echverri, who dropped it off to Mancini with a clear path to the upper left-hand corner of the net.Â
Miami (0-8-0, 0-1-0 MAC) cut the Rockets' lead in half in the 76th minute on a goal by Olivia Winnett.
The RedHawks looked to have momentum on their side, but the Rockets quickly put the visitors' comeback chances to rest. Pohl found junior
Hannah Scafaria for her team-leading third goal of the year to make the score 3-1 in the 83rd minute.
Toledo was able to hold onto the lead thanks to another strong defensive performance. Redshirt freshman
Madison Perrin made four saves between the posts for the Rockets.
This is the Rockets' first win in a conference opener since 2011. Toledo went on to win the MAC regular-season title, the MAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament that season.
The women's soccer team remains at home for a 1:05 p.m. kick time on Sunday, Sept. 24 against Ball State. Fans are welcome to bring their pet dogs for the Rockets 'Bark in the Park' day.
