AVON, Ohio - Toledo scored 10 runs over the final two innings to defeat Ball State, 15-5, in a Mid-American Conference Baseball Tournament elimination game on Thursday at Sprenger Stadium.Â
The Rockets (17-40) were led by a pair of juniors in
Brad Boss and
Matt Hansen. Boss went a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and five RBI, while Hansen collected five hits and scored four runs.Â
UT also received multi-hit games from sophomore
Ross Adolph (2-for-4)Â and freshman
Michael Ryan (2-for-6) to end the Cardinals' (30-28) season. Adolph doubled and drove in four runs, Ryan doubled and knocked in a pair, while senior Jake Krupar hit his first home run of the season in the double-digit win.
Senior RHP
Sam Shutes kept the Midnight Blue & Gold in the game early, allowing five runs on six hits with three walks in 5.2 innings.Â
Shutes worked with the lead early as Toledo took a 1-0 edge in its first at-bat. Hansen doubled to start the game and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Riley Campbell. Boss recorded his first RBI of the contest with a ground-rule double to left field. The Rockets added to the lead on Krupar's solo home run to right in the second frame.
UT kept the pressure on BSU with two more tallies in the third. Hansen singled to start the inning and again advanced on Campbell's sacrifice bunt. Boss walked and junior
Dalton Bollinger was hit by a pitch for a second time in the game to load the bases. Adolph then smoked a two-run double down the right field line to bring in Hansen and Boss.
Ball State climbed back into the game with a three-run home run from Matt Eppers in the third. Two innings later, the Cardinals knotted the scoring at 4-4 on a RBI groundout.
The Rockets responded in the next half inning, regaining a 5-4 advantage. Campbell singled to center and moved up on a sac bunt by Boss. A base hit by Bollinger and a walk to Adolph loaded the bases with one out. Two batters later, Krupar walked on four pitches to force in a run.
The Cardinals came back to tie the game, 5-5, in the sixth on a lead-off triple followed by a sacrifice fly. After the run scored, Shutes gave way to freshman RHP
Nate Haugh, who walked a pair upon entry, but got out of the frame with a bases-loaded strikeout of Eppers.
A Hansen single off the first base bag and a walk to Campbell put two Rockets aboard to begin the top of the eighth. Ball State then called on southpaw hurler Kevin Marnon to face Boss, who greeted him with a two-run double to give the Rockets a 7-5 lead. It proved to be an advantage Toledo would not relinquish.
Haugh retired the Cardinals in order in the eighth to bring the offense back to the plate quickly. With one out, Ryan singled and freshman
Antonio Bennett was hit by a pitch. Hansen then plated his lone run with a RBI single to right.
Campbell walked to fill the bases with Rockets and brought Boss to the plate. Boss continued his production with a two-run single, making the score 11-5. Toledo then poured it on with a two-run single by Adolph, followed by a run scoring on a wild pitch and a two-run double by Ryan to make the final margin 15-5.
Haugh (2-3) earned his second career win after working 3.1 no-hit innings of relief.Â
