OXFORD, Ohio – Sophomore pitcher
Heather Webb tossed a two-hit shutout and senior OF
Celeste Fidge knocked in two runs as Toledo (18-25, 6-5 MAC) blanked the RedHawks in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader at Miami Softball Field. Miami (20-16, 6-5 MAC) recorded a five-inning 14-1 win in the opener.
Â
Webb (8-8) was superb from the circle in firing her fifth complete game of the campaign. The Madisonville, KY native didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and the Rockets only permitted one Miami runner to reach third in the contest.
Â
Miami 14, Toledo 1 (5 inn)
Toledo was the first to threaten after it put two runners on off a pair of singles in the second. Both runners advanced into scoring position off a passed ball and sophomore
Megan Choate loaded the bases off a two-out walk. Unfortunately, a pop up to the shortstop left the runners stranded.
Â
A solo homer and two-run bomb by the RedHawks, with one out in the third, ended UT's starter freshman
Leah Allison's (0-2) stay in the circle as freshman
Alissa Noble was summoned out of the bullpen in relief. With a runner on first, Miami soon loaded the bases off a single through the right side and a free pass to Kaitlyn Gliha. Rylee Whispel drove a double to center to clear the bases and give Miami a commanding 6-0 advantage. Sophomore
Kailey Minarchick replaced Noble and permitted two more runs off of a pair of hits to boost the Miami lead to 8-0.
Â
Sophomore 3B
Katie Cozy lined a two-out double to center field in the next half inning but a ground out to the pitcher quickly ended UT's threat in the fourth.
Â
Consecutive walks to the RedHawks and a single up the middle loaded the bases for Miami in the bottom of the fourth. A couple of RBI singles extended the gap to 10-0. Michaela Schlattman drove a two-out three-run double to the center-field fence, and then she plated the last Miami run off a single by Eryn McCarver.
Â
Toledo got a base runner on in the fifth off a lead-off single to right by senior catcher
Ashley Maynard. Junior OF
Ashley Rausch put the Rockets on the scoreboard by lining a double to left field that brought Maynard home.
Â
Toledo 4, Miami 0
A walk and a fielder's choice put UT into business right from the start of the game. Fidge drove a one-out single to right to score both runners and nab a quick 2-0 lead. After a walk advanced Fidge to second, a fielding error by the RedHawk's third baseman permitted the senior to score and extend the gap to 3-0.
Â
Miami managed two base runners in the bottom-half of the inning off a walk and a fielder's choice but lined out to Cozy at third to end the frame.
Â
Neither team threatened again until the fourth when Choate leadoff with a free pass after being hit by a pitch. The sophomore advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt by junior
Marriah Wise, and scored Toledo's last tally off a double to right by senior 2B
Chandler Rice.
