Toledo Concludes Year with Eighth-Place Finish at MAC Championships

NASHPORT, Ohio – Toledo concluded its 2016-17 campaign on Sunday with an eighth-place showing at the Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships. The 72-hole event was played at The Virtues Golf Club (Par-72, 7,243 Yards).
The Rockets recorded a score of 45-over par 1,197 (289-300-302-306) over the course of the last three days at the league's premier event.
Junior co-captain Colin Joseph topped UT by tying for fourth place at one-under par 287 (74-69-69-75). The Loveland, OH native recorded a team-high 16 birdies during the four rounds of competition and was just one of five golfers to shoot under par, en route to posting his second-collegiate Top 5 finish. The third-year Rocket was honored following the tourney with a spot on the MAC All-Tournament Team.
Freshman Joe Bryce tied for the 16th spot at 11-over par 299 (70-74-76-79) and was followed by classmate Thomas Thurloway, who tied for 29th place at 15-over par 303 (76-72-76-76).
Thurloway also earned MAC Freshman of the Year accolades, marking the fourth time a Rocket has been honored. Brad Heaven received the award in 2001, Chris Selfridge in 2012 and most recently Otto Black in 2013.
Rounding out Toledo's lineup was sophomore Spencer Shoemaker, who finished in 41st place at 24-over par 312 (73-78-81-80).
Junior Stephen Watts also competed for the Midnight Blue & Gold this weekend, but the co-captain was disqualified for signing an illegal scorecard following yesterday's third round. Â
Kent State won its 24th team title in school history with a score of three-under par 1,149 (287-288-285-289), 25 strokes ahead of runner-up Ball State at 22-over par 1,174 (294-288-294-298).
Individually, KSU's Gisli Sveinbergsson captured medalist honors at eight-under par 280 (68-70-71-71), two shots in front of Miami's Patrick Flavin at six-under par 282 (69-71-67-75). The Golden Flashes had three golfers finish in the Top 6.
