Rockets Defeat Oakland, 4-2, in Midweek Matchup

ROCHESTER, Mich. – A two-run single up the middle with two down in the sixth by sophomore Katie Cozy was enough to boost Toledo softball (22-30, 9-9 MAC) over Oakland (17-19), 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Oakland Softball Field in Rochester, Mich.

Toledo's five hits were tallied by Cozy, senior second baseman Chandler Rice, freshman third baseman Samantha Golden, senior catcher Ashley Maynard, and junior Courtney Heinritz.

Freshman Leah Allison (1-3) notched her first collegiate victory after allowing one run on five hits and two walks in 4.2 innings of work. Allison replaced freshman starter Alissa Noble in the opening frame, and she was relieved by sophomore Heather Webb in the sixth.

The home team took a 1-0 lead in the first with the help of a bases-loaded walk.

The Rockets offense struck back in the top of the third after Golden led off with a double to right and advanced to third off a sacrifice bunt executed by Maynard. Junior first baseman Samantha Showalter followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, which allowed Golden to even the scoreboard at one run apiece.

Neither team threatened again until Oakland added a tally off an RBI double to left field in the bottom of the fifth.

Toledo put a pair of Rockets in scoring position via walk, a single and a groundout to first. Cozy stepped up to the dish and ripped a two-out single up the middle that allowed both runners to score and give UT its first lead of the contest, 3-2.

Heinritz added a security run in the seventh after stepping into the box, lining a single to left field, and scoring on Oakland's fielding error.
