KENT, Ohio - Senior left-handed pitcher
Steven Calhoun threw 9.0 scoreless innings, but the Rockets were done in by a 15th-inning error that plated the game's lone run in a 1-0 Mid-American Conference loss to Kent State on Friday night at Schoonover Stadium.
Toledo (14-24, 7-6 MAC) outhit its opponent 11-5 but could not come up with a clutch knock with runners in scoring position. All 11 of the Rockets hits were singles, while Kent State had just on extra-base hit.
Kent State (22-12, 8-2 MAC) starter Eli Kraus nearly matched Calhoun pitch-for-pitch as both starters tossed 9.0 scoreless innings of baseball. Calhoun allowed just five hits, three walks and four strikeouts compared to Kraus' seven hits, a walk and eight punchouts.
Both offenses had opportunities to score runs in the regulation innings. The Rockets best chance came in the sixth inning when freshman
Antonio Bennett reached on a bunt single and moved to second on junior
Brad Boss' sacrifice bunt.
Sophomore
Riley Campbell singled to left to move Bennett to third with one out. Junior
Matt Hansen bunted Campbell to second but could not score Bennett.
The Golden Flashes' scoring chance also came in the sixth when a lead off double put a runner in scoring position to start the frame. Calhoun induced a fly out and a line out to Hansen at short for two outs. After a walk, Calhoun ended the inning with a ground ball.
Bennett led off the extra innings with a 10th-inning single but a double play erased the threat. The Rockets rallied in the 12th on a lead off walk by senior
Josh Cales and a bunt single by freshman
Michael Ryan. A base running gaffe, a fly out and a ground out ended the inning with no runs crossing the plate.
Sophomore
Luke Schaefer entered the game for Calhoun in the 10th and kept the shutout intact. Schaefer hurled 3.0 no-hit innings in relief. Cales moved from the designated hitter spot to the mound and threw a scoreless 13th inning.
Junior
AJ Montoya singled to start the 14th frame and Cales was hit by a pitch with one out. After a pitching change and a pinch-hit appearance led to a double play to get the Flashes out of the inning. Cales worked a perfect 14th inning to extend the game.
A lead off walk and a stolen base put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Cales struckout the next batter and issued an intentional walk to set up a possible double play.
A slow chopper to short found its way into left-center field which allowed the first and only run of the game to reach home plate.
The Rockets and Golden Flashes meet for game two of the three game series tomorrow, April 22, at 4:00 p.m.
