TOLEDO, Ohio - Toledo launched four home runs to account for all seven Rockets scores as the Midnight Blue & Gold completed a three-game sweep of Buffalo, 7-6, on a windy Sunday afternoon at Scott Park.
UT (13-23, 7-5 MAC) has now won five-straight Mid-American Conference games and six of its last seven. Toledo was led by junior
Brad Boss who was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and scored twice.Â
Buffalo (10-22, 3-6 MAC) notched the first run of the game in the top of the first on a one-out double and an RBI single off of senior starting pitcher
Sam Shutes.Â
The Rockets responded in the bottom half with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. Boss singled to start the frame and moved to third on productive outs by sophomore
Riley Campbell and junior
Matt Hansen. With two-outs, junior
Dalton Bollinger blasted his fourth homer of the season and his third in the last five games.
A walk and a double set up UB to tie the score, 2-2, on an RBI groundout. The next batter was Kyle Brennan who hit a high fly ball that found its way over the left field wall to make the count, 4-2.
Again, the Rocket answered, and again the answer came via the home run. This time it was Boss who lined the 2-1 offering down the right field line for a solo shot.
Buffalo added a run, making it 5-3, in the fourth but Shutes did a great job to limit damage. The Bulls had runners on second and third with two outs and Shutes was able to get Brennan swinging to end the rally.
Shutes returned for the fifth inning closing in on 100 pitches and made quick work of the Bulls thanks in part to a perfect throw by freshman battery mate
Michael Ryan to gun down a would-be base stealer.
Toledo tied the score, 5-5, in the sixth with its third round tripper of the contest. Campbell walked to begin the inning and Hansen smoked a 3-1 fastball that cleared the wall in right-center field.
The Rockets duplicated the sixth inning during their next at bat as freshman
Malave Bettinger took a free pass leading off. The next batter was Ryan and he crushed the first pitch of the at-bat just left of the batter's eye wall in center field.
Freshman
Layne Schnitz-Paxton came on in relief of Shutes and had his best outing thus far. Schnitz-Paxton retired the side in order during the sixth and seventh before running into trouble in the eighth. A leadoff walk and an RBI double plated a run for the Bulls to pull within one, 7-6.
Sophomore
Luke Schaefer recorded the final two outs of the eighth and worked a scoreless ninth for his first career save. Schnitz-Paxton is credited with his first career win in relief.
The Rockets travel to Dayton for a midweek game against the Flyers and stay of the road for a three-game MAC series at Kent State.
