PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Toledo fell behind in the second inning and was unable to battle back from the early deficit in a 9-2 loss to Northeastern on Wednesday morning.
The Rockets (1-12) sent freshman
Austin Calopietro to the mound for his first career start. Calopietro worked a perfect opening inning before allowing four runs in the second. The first run scored on an error which was followed by a three-run home run to right field.
Calopietro worked a scoreless third inning before giving way to sophomore left-hander
Alex Wagner. Wagner cruised through the fourth, fifth and sixth inning, but found trouble in the seventh. Wagner struck out the first batter in the inning, but did not record another out as Northeastern scored five times off of a combination of Wagner, freshman
Nate Haugh and fifth-year senior
Kyle Slack.
Toledo was kept out of the hit column until a two-out single by junior
AJ Montoya in the seventh. Senior
Josh Cales pinch hit in the inning and plated freshman
Malave Bettinger, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Montoya for the Rockets two runs.Â
Sophomore
Nolan Silberhorn and fifth-year senior
Caleb Schillace each worked scoreless innings for UT to close out the game.Â
Calopietro (0-1) takes the loss and Northeastern's Sean Mellen claims the win. The defeat is Toledo's seventh-straight loss on the season.
The Rockets will be off tomorrow (March 9) before playing a three-game series with Florida Atlantic from Friday, March 10 to Sunday, March 13.
