Big Inning Dooms Rockets in 12-3 Loss to South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. - An eight-run fifth inning doomed the Rockets in a 12-3 loss to South Florida on Saturday night at the USF Baseball Stadium.

Toledo (1-9) trailed by just a run, 4-3, when USF sent 12 batters to the plate, collecting four hits to score eight runs and put the game out of reach.

The Rockets wasted no time offensively and led 2-0 after the opening inning of play. Junior Matt Hansen was hit with the first pitch of the game and AJ Montoya followed suit and was hit two pitches later. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and Hansen scored on an RBI ground out by Junior Dalton Bollinger. Montoya scored during the next at-bat on a second passed ball of the inning.

South Florida (9-1) cut the lead in half with a second-inning run off of fifth-year senior starting pitcher Ross Achter, but UT responded with a run of its own in the third. Sophomore Riley Campbell singled down the right field line and Hansen's bunt moved him to second. After Montoya flied out, Sophomore Ross Adolph put together a superb at-bat and was rewarded with an RBI single up the middle.

USF took the lead in the bottom of the third on the strength of two extra-base hits. Achter surrendered a double to lead off the frame and an RBI single to bring home the first run. The big blow came later in the inning on an RBI triple by Joe Genord, who scored on an error.

Achter was lifted after throwing 86 pitches in 4.0 innings of work. The left-hander allowed four runs on six hits, three walks and struck out four.

The Bulls put together four hits with a pair of walks, a pair of hit batsmen and was helped by a Toledo error to score eight runs in a long fifth inning.

Both teams threatened in the final four innings, but neither was able to push across a run. Casey Johnson was a bright spot for the Rockets bullpen. The sophomore hurled 1.1 innings of no-hit baseball to close the game.

Achter (1-2) takes the loss, while USF's Shane McClanahan betters his record to 2-0 on the year.

The Rockets and the Bulls end their three-game series with a 1:00 p.m. meeting on Sunday, March 5.
