CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Toledo put together a seven-run eighth inning to claim a 10-2 win over Southern Illinois on Saturday, March 18 in the University of Illinois Tournament.
The Rockets (4-15) jumped in front, 2-0, with a pair of runs in the third inning. Junior
Brad Boss was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI double by junior
Matt Hansen. Hansen advanced to third and scored on a wild pitch.
Southern Illinois (9-9) answered with a run on a double and a pair of fielder's choices to score a run to make the total 2-1.
UT responded in the sixth with a Hansen walk to lead off the inning. Sophomore
Riley Campbell bunted Hansen to second and junior
Dalton Bollinger scored Hansen on a single down the left field line.
Toledo broke the game open with a seven-run inning in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Freshman
Michael Ryan walked, Hansen singled and Campbell singled to load the bases with nobody out.
Sophomore
Ross Adolph walked with the bases loaded to force home a run and Campbell scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead. After junior
AJ Montoya walked to load the bases, senior pinch hitter
Jacob Britt singled to score Bollinger.
Junior
Brad Boss was safe on a throwing error, scoring Bennett and Montoya. Ryan came through with a two-run single, plating Boss and Britt to make the score 10-1.
The Salukis scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to make the final count 10-2.
Fifth-year senior
Ross Achter recorded his second win of the season and now leads the squad with two wins. Achter went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on a pair of hits and a walk.
The Rockets will play Illinois in the finale of the University of Illinois Tournament on Sunday, March 19 at 11:00 a.m.
