BOCA RATON, Fla. - Junior
Dalton Bollinger went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two RBIs and a pair of runs but it was not enough as Florida Atlantic came back from down seven to beat Toledo, 11-8, on Saturday evening at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
Toledo (1-14) led 8-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but an eight-run frame gave the Owls a lead the would not relinquish, leading to the Rockets ninth-straight loss.
The Rockets put the first run of the game on the board in the top of the second inning. Bollinger led off and hit one of his three doubles over the center fielders head. Bollinger advanced to third on a passed ball, never broke stride and scored all the way from second when FAU's catcher could not locate the sphere.Â
UT added to its lead with a three-run third and a three-run fourth to make the score 7-0. In the third, it was senior
Corey Tipton who started the rally with a walk. Junior
Matt Hansen bunted Tipton to second, where he would score on an RBI double by
Riley Campbell. Campbell scored easily as Bollinger laced another double to right center, his second of the day. Bollinger scored during the next at-bat as junior
AJ Montoya singled to cap the scoring run.
Junior
Brad Boss tripled down the right field line to start the fourth and was awarded home when an errant throw bounced out of play. Tipton was the catalyst against with the bases clear as the catcher was hit by a pitch and advanced on a bunt single by Campbell. Sophomore
Ross Adolph connect for a base knock to load the bags for Bollinger. Bollinger singled home Tipton and left the table set for Montoya who cashed in with a sacrifice fly, scoring Campbell.
Florida Atlantic (10-4-1) scored its lone run off of Toledo's senior starter
Ross Achter in the fourth inning without a hit. A pair of walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases and a wild pitch brought in the first run for the Owls.
The Owls loaded the bases again in the sixth and could only muster one run on a sacrifice fly, cutting the Rockets lead to 7-2. Toledo answered with their final run in the seventh, starting with a
Josh Cales single. The senior advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on an RBI base hit by Tipton.
FAU sent 11 batters to the plate in the seventh to score eight runs and take a 10-8 lead. The big blow in the inning was a grand slam by Aldrich DeJongh that tied the game at 8-8. A two-run home run by David Miranda later in the inning gave the Owls the lead. FAU tacked on another run in the eighth to make the final 11-8.
Freshman
Nate Haugh is saddled with the loss, while Achter finishes with a no-decision. Achter went 5.0 innings and allowed one run on two hits, four walks and four strikeouts.Â
Toledo concludes its series with Florida Atlantic and its spring trip with an 11:00 a.m. contest on Sunday, March 12 in Boca Raton, Fla.
