Rockets Defeated Twice in Double Header at Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -  The Toledo baseball team was defeated in two games of a twin bill against Tennessee Tech on Saturday at Bush Stadium. The Rockets fell 10-2 in the afternoon contest before being shutout 10-0 in the nightcap.

The Rockets slide to 0-3 on the season while Tennessee Tech stays unbeaten at 3-0.

Game 1

Defensive miscues and a trio of three run innings by Tennessee Tech proved to be the difference as the Rockets were defeated 10-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Junior third baseman Dalton Bollinger staked UT to a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a towering leadoff home run to left field.

TTU answered in the bottom half of the inning as the first three batters reached safely. A walk, a single and an RBI double to left center tied the game at 1-1 in the early goings. This would be the only earned run allowed by Toledo senior starting pitcher Ross Achter.

After the Rockets went quietly in the third, Tennessee Tech started the third with a hit-by-pitch and a harmless fly out. A passed ball moved the Golden Eagle runner to second and another past ball on strike three put runners on first and third.

The next batter hit a long sacrifice fly to plate a run before Chase Chambers homered for the second consecutive game, this one a two-run shot to right center field, making the score 4-1. All three runs in the inning were unearned.

Freshman Austin Calopietro made his collegiate debut by replaced Achter on the mound for the sixth inning. After retiring the first batter, a single, a walk and an error loaded the bases. The next two Golden Eagles singled to push across three more runs.

UT responded with a run of its own in the seventh. Sophomore Ross Adolph reached on an error and Bollinger walked. Junior Matt Hansen singled through the left side, scoring Adolph, but was thrown out retreating to first. Tennessee Tech was able to limit the damage with two key strikeout to end the threat.

TTU tacked on three runs in the bottom half of the seventh on a three-run home run by Collin Harris, for the final score of 10-2.

Achter (0-1) was the tough luck loser, allowing four runs, one earned, on four hits through 5.0 innings. Achter struck out nine, one short of his career-high.

Freshman Nate Haugh was impressive in his Rockets' debut, hurling 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

Game 2

The Toledo bats went silent in the second game of the double header as the Rockets were able to muster only three hits in a 10-0 loss to Tennessee Tech on Saturday night.

Senior Sam Shutes set down the first three Golden Eagles in order but defensive lapses in the second inning again proved costly. The leadoff batter reached on an error and a double put runners on second and third. An RBI groundout and a past ball plated two unearned runs in the inning to give TTU a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles tallied the lone earned run off of Shutes in the fourth innings an another unearned run in the sixth to make the count 4-0.

Sophomore Casey Johnson walked the first two batters in the seventh inning before giving way to senior Kyle Slack. A pair of singles and a three-run home run sent five run across the plate and make it 9-0. TTU added a single run in the eighth to put the game out of question.

Shutes (0-1) was pegged with the loss after allowing four runs, one earned, on three hits, three walk and a couple of strikeouts.

The Rockets will wrap up the four-game weekend series with Tennessee Tech on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 1:00 p.m.
