PITTSBURGH, PA. – Toledo saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with a 73-54 loss at Duquesne in Wednesday's non-conference tilt at the A.J. Palumbo Center. With the setback, the Rockets fall to 6-2 on the season.
Â
The Dukes (8-2) connected on 11 three-point field goals and shot a blistering 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from beyond the arc to hand UT its first loss in over three weeks.
Â
Chassidy Omogrosso and Julijana Vojinovic did a bulk of DU's damage from three-point range with four treys each, while Kadri-Ann Lass had two. Omogrosso led Duquesne with a game-high 19 points, followed by Vojinovic and Lass with 18 and 12, respectively.
Junior
Kaayla McIntyre paced Toledo with 14 points, seven boards and a season-high three steals, while classmate
Olivia Cunningham had 10.
Â
As a team, the Rockets shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the floor, including, 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from three-point land, and 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from the charity stripe.
Â
Another difference in tonight's match-up was Duquesne's ability to tally points off UT miscues. The Rockets were guilty of 16 turnovers and the Dukes translated those miscues into 22 points.
Â
Duquesne broke open a close game with a 12-4 run over the final 4:42 of the second quarter to assume a 39-31 lead at the intermission. It proved to be an advantage they would not relinquish.
Â
Omogrosso nailed a triple and Paige Cannon followed with a traditional three-point play to account for the first six DU points in the burst. UT momentarily stopped Duquesne's momentum on a pair of free throws by McIntyre, before Duquesne reeled off six of the final eight points to take an eight-point cushion at the break. Libby Bazelak triggered the final rally with her team's seventh three-point field goal in the opening 20 minutes to make it a three-possession difference at the half.
Â
The Dukes remained red-hot shooting the ball from the perimeter in the third period, as Vojinovic and Omogrosso converted two treys each to extend UT's deficit to double figures, 57-47, after 30 minutes of competition.
Â
Unfortunately for the Midnight Blue & Gold, they would be unable to get any closer than nine points for the remainder of regulation as their six-winning streak against Atlantic 10 Conference opponents also came to an end. Â
Â
The Rockets will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Dec. 9 when they entertain Cleveland State in their only home game during the month of December. The opening tip versus the Vikings is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and the game will be streamed live on ESPN3.
Â
UT has held a decisive edge against CSU in games played at home, winning the last 10 by an average of 20.7 ppg (76.3-55.6). The Vikings' most recent victory in Toledo occurred on Jan. 24, 1981 when they escaped town with a 60-51 triumph.
Â
In conjunction with Saturday's game, a Teddy Bear Toss sponsored by Kistler Ford will be held at halftime. Fans are encouraged to bring a new teddy bear to the game to be tossed onto the court at halftime to benefit area children during the holiday season.
In addition, Santa Claus will be on the West Concourse for children to visit when doors open an hour before each game until the end of halftime.
