Toledo Extends Winning Streak With 74-57 Victory at Iona College

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Toledo extended its winning streak to four-straight games with a 74-57 victory over Iona on Monday afternoon in the Hynes Center. With the win, UT runs its record to 4-1 on the season.

Junior Mikaela Boyd paced three Rockets in double figures with a season-high 14 points and a season-best 11 caroms to post her first double-double on the year and 11th in her collegiate career. Boyd shot an efficient 6-of-9 from the floor and 2-of-4 from the free throw line in a season-high 39 minutes.

Junior Kaayla McIntyre and senior Jada Woody added 10 points each to help the 2017 Mid-American Conference Champions improve to 11-0 all-time against teams from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

UT also received nine points from senior Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott and sophomore Mariella Santucci, as well as seven by junior Sarah St-Fort and junior Olivia Cunningham to win its fourth-consecutive contest versus the Gaels (0-5).

As a team, the Rockets connected on a season-high 54.2 percent (26-of-48) from the field, including a sensational 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from beyond the arc, and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the charity stripe.

Treyanna Clay led Iona with a game-high 15 points and 10 boards, while Alexis Lewis Amelia Motz and Tilasha Okey-Williams had 10 points, respectively.

UT exploded out of the gates, hitting six of its first seven field-goal attempts and held a 14-4 lead at the 6:01 mark to force the home team to call an early timeout. Four different Rockets converted baskets during the opening burst, including triples from Bravo-Harriott and Santucci, to give the Midnight Blue & Gold a double-digit advantage.

Toledo kept up its red-hot start following the timeout and scored 11 of the final 13 points to assume a 27-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The visitors shot a sizzling 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the field in the opening 10 minutes, including an even better 80.0 percent (3-of-5) from three-point land, to help them build a 15-point cushion. Seven different players scored points in the stanza, highlighted by Boyd and McIntyre with six points each.

In the second period, the Gaels scored the opening 10 points to cut the margin to 27-22 at the 4:16 mark. A total of four Gaels accounted for points during this stretch to prompt the Rockets to call a timeout.

UT momentarily stopped the bleeding on a layup by McIntyre, but Iona responded by scoring eight of the next 12 points to make the difference 33-30 at the intermission. After shooting over 70 percent from the floor in the first period, the Rockets were held to 28.6 percent (2-of-7) in the second and guilty of 10 turnovers to see their lead shrink to three points at the break.

Woody helped Toledo calm its nerves in the third period, scoring eight-straight points to set the score at 49-42 after 30 minutes of competition. The Canton, Mich. native drilled a pair of triples and a layup in a span of just over one minute to make it a three-possession contest.

UT then put the away by scoring the first 10 points in the fourth quarter to stretch the margin back to double figures, 59-42, at the 6:34 mark. The Rockets spread the wealth in the game-sealing run, as four players' tallied points to create a game-high 17-point advantage.

The closest the Gaels would get for the remainder of the contest was 12 points, as Toledo posted an impressive 17-point road triumph.

The Rockets return to the hardwood on Thursday, Nov. 30 when they host America East Conference member Maine. The opening tip against the Black Bears is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
